Is It Normal To Talk To Yourself?
You’re not alone if you’ve found yourself talking to yourself.
Maybe you were looking for your lost keys and the words “Where did I put those?” just kinda…slipped out.
Or perhaps you’ve found yourself giving yourself a little pep talk before a big exam or presentation. “You’ve got this. Just stay calm and breathe.”
If so, no need to feel embarrassed! Talking to yourself is totally normal. In fact, it’s something pretty much everyone does on a regular basis.

Studies show a whopping 96% of people engage in some form of self-talk at least once per day!
Now, you might be thinking: “Okay, but isn’t talking to yourself a little…weird? Doesn’t it mean you’re crazy or something?”
Well, let me put your mind at ease. Self-talk starts way earlier than you might expect — all the way back when we’re little kids.
When you were a toddler, you probably walked around babbling constantly to yourself as you played. Narrating your activities, mimicking conversations you overheard adults having, you were actually practicing developing some crazy important skills:
- Learning to use language properly
- Figuring out how to control your thoughts and emotions
- Getting better at planning, focus, and problem-solving
Basically, all that self-talk was helping your young brain develop and get ready to take on more advanced reasoning and tasks.
Pretty cool, right? By talking to yourself, you were literally coaching your own brain on how to think!
As you got older, that early self-talk didn’t disappear. It just got quieter, transforming into what’s known as “inner speech” or your internal monologue.
That constant stream of thoughts and private narration we all experience in our heads every day? Yep, that’s just self-talk that’s become internalized over time.
And you know what? Having that inner voice can actually be super useful for us as we navigate daily life. Here are just a few ways self-talk gives us a cognitive boost:
🧠 It helps us plan out and focus on complex tasks
💪 It motivates us to keep going when things get tough
😊 It allows us to process and manage our emotions better
🤔 It aids in problem-solving and making difficult decisions
Want an example? Let’s say you’re trying to learn a new video game that has a ton of controls and moves. Talking yourself through it step-by-step can improve your skills way faster than just stumbling blindly.
Or imagine you’re feeling really nervous before a championship game. Giving yourself a little pep talk like “You’ve worked so hard for this, Sam. You’ve got this!” can calm your nerves and boost your confidence.
See what I mean?
Self-talk is like having your own personal coach living right inside your mind, helping guide you through all kinds of situations.
Now don’t get me wrong, not all self-talk is positive and productive. We can also get in the bad habit of engaging in a lot of negative self-criticism or rumination.
You know, that mean voice that loves to say unhelpful junk like “You’re so stupid for messing that up” or “Things never work out for you.” Yeah, those kinds of harsh put-downs can really drag us down over time.
Researchers have found a strong link between excessive negative self-talk patterns and increased risk for issues like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Not something any of us wants, right?
The good news is, we can actually train ourselves to engage in more balanced, constructive self-talk through practices like cognitive behavioral therapy. Catching and reframing those unhelpful thought patterns can work wonders.
At the end of the day, self-talk is just a normal part of the human experience that serves some pretty vital purposes. It’s how our brains process the world around us and figure out how to navigate everything life throws our way.
So the next time you find yourself narrating your thoughts aloud or holding an internal pep talk, don’t be too hard on yourself.
You’re just engaging in a completely normal, probably even beneficial human habit — one we all indulge in far more often than we realize.
Just be sure to keep that inner voice positive, encouraging and focused on solutions rather than beating yourself up.
