Is burning wood the best heating system?
Looking back into history, what was the first heating system humans started to use?
Was it Fire or Animal skins?
I guess Animal skins would have been earlier, but fire became the ultimate heating system allowing us to survive in harsh conditions, prepare meals and make us feel secure.
Several thousand years later, in many places around the world burning wood is still the only way to stay warm. Do we think that these people are out of their time?
Today we like to think that there are better ways of keeping your home warm:
- Using Heat pumps
- Using Electrical heating systems
- Fossil fuel powered heating systems
We like to think that this advancement in technology is great. We see a huge shift towards heating pumps and electric heating systems. The arguments are of course great:
- Less impact on the environment
- Usually 20+ years warranty
- Less time thinking about the the system (Full automation)
- No need for a chimney or boiler room
and the list goes on.
When we first build our home I was impressed with the Pros for a heating pump, but then I started to think about several factors that are important from a house in the mountains perspective:
- What happens with the pump (and usually PV system) after 20 years?
- What happens if the Temperature falls below -35 Celsius?
- What if there is a black out in the winter? Nothing unusual if the power grid contains just 1 line
- What if the Service can not get through the snow? Sometimes we are cutout for several days
With these questions in mind I discovered that the best solution would be to use Firewood.
Burning wood is the only truly renewable energy system in the world.
- Zero impact on the environment
- CO2 neutral
- A Cast Iron Stove can last for several hundred years!
- No Service needed
- No Electricity needed
- Ashes can be used as soil for your veggie garden
Sure there are some setbacks like:
- You have to make fire everyday ( My daily routine in the morning)
- You need to ensure to have a place for storage
- You might get burned on your fingers now and then
- You need to prep the wood before the winter season.
