Anna was everywhere, quickly becoming an “it-girl” never revealing where her wealth came from. Claiming to want to launch a private Art club and foundation in her name.

For this endeavour, Anna secured “loans” from New York hotels, Banks and many other wealthy “friend” financiers.

Set in 2017, following closely through to her arrest, trial and eventual incarceration for 4-12 years for Grand Larceny and theft. The series details these exploits.

It slips us into the life of determined pregnant journalist Vivian Kent (played by Anna Chlumsky). Vivian investigates the many faces, of Anna Sorokin.

Vivian tirelessly digs into Anna’s past, frequently interviewing Anna in prison and going rouge from her employers. Vivian interviews the many scammed by Anna’s broad influence in her rise to infamy.

Created by Shonda Rhimes

The Netflix series was created by Shonda Rhimes the powerhouse producer: best known for working on Grey’s Anatomy & Scandal. There is a lot of speculation about Shonda’s input of fiction in the series.

Shonda details the careful research embedded into the creation of the show. Researchers captured the essence of Anna’s story, only fictionalising trivial points which wouldn’t alter the premise.

“We wanted to intentionally be fictionalising moments versus just accidentally be fictionalising them.”

— Shonda, Inventing Anna: The Offical Podcast.

Final Thoughts On The Infamous Con Artist

This article was written out of pure curiosity and intense fascination for this young, highly intelligent, businesswoman/criminal.

Her influx of cash and twenty-something socialite demeanour spoke to the ease of deceiving the masses. Anna wasn’t out there to be a “socialite” she genuinely believed her foundation would come to fruition.

Her rapid intrusion into high society shows how intelligence and manipulation, combined with social media influence are more powerful than we’ll ever be able to comprehend.

VIP is always better, Vivian, you just have to be willing to do the work

— Julia Garner, As Anna Sorokin.

The tenacity of Anna’s character blew me away in the series.

Then further shell shocked by the lengths the real Anna Sorokin continues to advocate for her actions. Admitting in an interview with Emily Palmer (reporter)how her intentions were not fraudulent almost by definition.

However, openly accepting her guilt from the suffering her actions caused others. Though I completely acknowledge the harm her enormous scale scams her deception caused.

Her story is irreplaceably valuable! Therefore, worth sharing! ❤
