Summary

The poem "Instead of Truth" reflects on the current state of politics, lamenting the loss of trust and the pervasive influence of power dynamics, marketing, and dishonesty in political discourse.

Abstract

The poem "Instead of Truth" by Jonathan Greene delves into the disillusionment with modern politics, where hyperbolic rhetoric and the pursuit of power overshadow genuine public service. It suggests that political debates are more about crafting a polished image than engaging in honest dialogue. The author questions the integrity of political processes, highlighting the disparity between public service and the reality of political maneuvering. The piece also criticizes the transactional nature of political donations, which are often disguised as free trade but are, in fact, strategic investments aimed at influencing policy. The poem concludes by likening the state of politics to a manipulative Facebook ad that preys on societal fears.

Opinions

  • Politics is seen as a power struggle rather than a means to help the public.
  • Political debates are superficial, focusing on image and filtered presentation rather than substance.
  • The essence of politics has been corrupted by the desire for power and recognition.
  • Political donations are not truly 'free' but are strategic transactions expecting a return.
  • The political system is compared to a manipulative social media ad, exploiting people's fears.
  • There is a call for politics to be more honest, straightforward, and genuinely check-and-balanced.

Instead of Truth

A Poem

Political diatribes sink our soul deep into the soil but not because we are ready to bloom Because we are buried

Buried beneath the rubble of hyperbole and marketing instead of truth

The truth is that we don’t know who we can trust anymore because politics, in its essence, is not about helping it is mainly a power grab or a badge of honor that becomes worn before its ever actually worn

We watch debates but all they really represent are clips on Instagram Live always trying to show our best selves and using a filter so we look better than we really are Just a regular person being pushed too far to be part of a relentless machine that won’t stop until a reputation is lost inside of the mouth that feeds the same machine

What if politics were honest and straightforward and actually had checks and balances and didn’t suck itself up every hole offering funding for another campaign built on lies?

It’s sad when you see what companies donate to who and why They do it so they can have free trade but if it was really free, would they have to pay for it? Free is without the expectation of a cash advance in favor of…it doesn’t even matter because they want something so they give something but in the end, it’s just nothing It’s all nothing Vapid and vacant Malevolent and misplaced Just a giant Facebook ad targeting our worst fears
