Instagram’s New Algorithm That is Trying to Give Us All a Heart Attack
Essentially Instagram’s main goals are to compete with TikTok and to better serve creators
If you’re a social media manager, content creator, or small business owner that runs their own social then you have heard about Instagram’s new algorithm. I manage several Instagram accounts for both myself and my clients. These new changes have been frustrating to navigate and have impacted each account differently.
If you’ve experienced dips in engagement and reach, know that you’re not alone! I know that social media can be confusing, so I am sharing my research with you for everything that I’ve learned about the new algorithm. If you’ve learned anything that I have excluded, PLEASE, help us all and include it in the comments!
The new algorithm is designed to:
- reward original content
- promote reels
- especially for accounts with a longer history of posting reels
- they’ve introduced a new “reels bonus”. You can get paid for your reels based on views. It’s only available to certain accounts, but *crosses fingers* should be coming to more accounts.
- help businesses
- help discover new content. As you scroll Instagram now you’ll see a lot of posts from hashtags you follow and suggested content based on what Instagram thinks you want to see.
- be more accessible
- alt image descriptions and captions for video content have been around for a while, but their importance is continuing to grow!
- Instagram wants to make content more accessible to the hearing impaired community and communities who speak languages other than English. They are adding more features to make this happen.
Instagram is trying to move away from:
- aggregator accounts. The new algorithm is designed to prioritize original content and deprioritze reposts of content created by other accounts.
- posts (single image) and carousels (multiple images).
- These posts are still an option, and you will still see them while scrolling the app, but you’ll see a lot more reels
Potential good that can come from the new algorithm:
- rewarding original content is great!
- more features for small businesses that make it easier to shop on the app and direct customers to your products/services is great!
- competing with TikTok could potentially retain more users from leaving Instagram to go to TikTok
- making the app more accessible could lead to new users joining the app who previously had no use for it
Potential nightmares that can come from the new algorithm:
- glitches! As they continue to roll out new changes, unexpected glitches are to be expected
- Will the new algorithm actually do what it’s designed to do? No one knows! Especially in regards to prioritizing original content and deprioritizing reposting, even Instagram’s president says that we won’t know how successful the algorithm will be in achieving these goals until it’s implemented and we all buckle up and see what happens!
- Content that has traditionally performed well may underperform under the new algorithm
- It may be harder to reach our existing followers as Insta continues to clog the feed with suggested posts from new accounts that they don’t follow
Strategies for potential success with the new algorithm:
- post more reels!
- always include alt image descriptions and closed captions when applicable
- incorporate keywords in bio, captions, and alt image descriptions
In conclusion:
This will probably (continue to) be a bumpy ride as more and more changes roll out. But if we stay abreast of the changes, keep up with the trends, post original content, and have a “I’d rather laugh than cry” attitude, I think we can continue to utilize Instagram as a great tool to reach more people and grow a fun virtual community!
Here are my somewhat organized notes if you want more information:
- Prioritizing original content, vs reposted content
- Trying to penalize aggregators, and reward creators
- App is getting a makeover
- new brighter logo
- full screen imagery
- More immersive, prioritizing full screen video content
- 9:16 ratio
