FICTION | 💯 STORY CHALLENGE

Innocuous Coffee

№4 Of 💯 – A new boyfriend and an intense desire

By Bridie D on Canva

Her lip lightly riding the rim of the mug she sipped her black coffee. Her face had no expression, clear like a freshly swept floor.

I watched her as I sipped my own bitter coffee. I’d said too much, without thinking. I’d asked her about her new boyfriend, trying not to let envy taint the words.

Our brief lip-lock hung over me. What the fuck was I doing here? Why was I so attached to this girl?

With one drunken kiss and a handful of midnight phone calls, I was lost to her. I wanted her to be my partner, my person. Never would this come to fruition. She ignored our past, our touch, she did this as nonchalantly as if watching clouds drift.

I try and remind myself we are just friends. Try and remember she isn’t into girls. She was lonely, sad and bored. That’s all I am to her a quick comfort. A springboard, nothing more.

Her new boyfriend was older, I knew that much. He wasn’t the kind to get jealous she’d said. She’d come out to coffee with me out of pity it seemed. Not wanting to dish too much about her new beau.

We quietly sipped our steaming mugs.

Quietly I tried to burn my longing for this gorgeous heathen with each sip of the innocuous coffee.
