Ingrid Goes West

An alarming look at social media

“ An unhinged social media stalker moves to LA and insinuates herself into the life of an Instagram star.” — official plot summary from IMDB

That plot summary is all you need to know. This is NOT a movie review. I don’t do movie reviews or book reviews. I am merely urging everyone to view this movie and form your own opinion.

If you are at all involved with social media (and who isn’t?) then this is an important film to watch. It shines a very bright light on how social media is changing our world, in both negative and positive ways.

Personally, I needed to see something positive about social media given my aversion to it (which says some things about my own psychoses). The negative attributes of social media I was already aware of although not to the full extent this film highlights.

With the film being produced by Aubrey Plaza and starring her, I really didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t expecting anything very intelligent or artistic. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! This movie is very intelligent and very well made and yes, artistic. Kudos to Aubrey Plaza and crew.

What I suggest is to NOT read any reviews of this movie. Watch it without any preconceived expectations. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says about a movie or a book (including and especially me). The only thing that matters is how a movie or book makes YOU feel. As for this film, it may very well matter how you feel about social media after seeing it.
