“When I was young — back in the dark ages, you know — children never disrespected their elders.”

It was hard for me to picture Grandpa young. He was already old when I was born, or so he said.

There was no indoor plumbing until after the war. He went to school in a one-room schoolhouse. He did chores before and after. He walked uphill in the snow both ways — barefoot!

Grandma whispered, “It’s true — except it was downhill going home.”

“He went barefoot in the snow?” I gasped.

“We both did. Only rich kids had shoes.”

I smiled. “I’m rich!”

I’m sure we all had grandparents who walked uphill to and from school barefoot in the snow. We were so spoiled, you know.

Drabbles are complete stories with exactly 100 words. They are not only fun to write, they help us develop editing skills! It’s the old “Kill your darlings” with immediate gratification.
