Abstract

p>
The Public Washroom Issue

For those of you women who have a problem with transgendered people going into the same public washroom as you, here’s my personal message. You should not worry about trans women using public washrooms. You should worry about the hidden camera in that bathroom stall that you just used. Yes, male perverts nowadays use GoPros to catch you half naked in those stalls. They don’t dress up as women with hairy arms and legs anymore. These men somehow sneak those cameras in ladies' restrooms. And when the coast is clear, they go back in to retrieve those to watch later on their home computer.

Trans people have to use the washroom like everyone else. How else are they going to relieve themselves?

Gender Dysphoria

I believe in a condition called Gender Dysphoria. It is a thing. There are people out there who never felt comfortable with the gender they were born with. If one has this condition, it will lead to depression and maybe suicide, if they don’t transition into the gender that they want to be. This is why it’s important to accept everyone for who they are and not how you think they should fit into society’s gender norms. Not everyone is going to fit into your idea of what is masculine or feminine. By the way, gender norms are always changing.

I also believe that Trans women are women, and that Trans men are men. Yes, they were born in a gender they didn’t want to be in, so what? They are human just like everyone else on this planet. The only difference is that they know what it is like to be both genders: the good, bad, and ugly.

I don’t mean to discriminate, but I think the “freaks” out there are those straight white folks who want to go back to a simpler time before everything became politically correct and discrimination was rampant.

Note: This article contains an affiliate link to Audiobooks.com. In Defence of Transgendered People Everywhere

Like many of you, I read that awful article discriminating against Trans people on Medium. But I didn’t finish reading it because my attention was somewhere else. I definitely didn’t agree with the author of that piece. And as a straight woman who was born female, I was outraged.

Being part of the first generation that was hooked on Rock Videos on MTV (or MuchMusic if you’re Canadian), I recall watching videos of Boy George and Culture Club, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, or any of the other androgynous-looking musicians as a kid. I thought it was rebellion and normal at the time. I admired Boy George because of his music, style, and colorful personality. I didn’t care about who he slept with. That’s even though I knew nothing about sex until I was a teenager.

During the 80s, AIDS was taking many lives, and homophobia and transphobia was everywhere. It never occurred to me to connect AIDS to being gay, just that it was spread through sexual contact, no matter your orientation.

When I was growing up in a Catholic family back then, the word “gay” was used as a derogatory insult. I never understood why. Whenever I asked what it meant, other kids would reply, “You don’t want to know.”

I didn’t know what gay was until I was 14.

The Pagan Community

Joining the pagan community, I discovered that there were lots of LGBTQ people there. To me, Paganism is the only religion that is tolerant of everyone no matter their race, gender, or sexuality.

I’ve even met a trans woman in one pagan coven whom I became friends with. I hadn’t realized she was trans until one of our friends asked about her estrogen medication. I remember once when we were talking about some female topics and she pulled me aside to ask if I knew she was trans. I told her I knew, without giving her details on how.

We even went to the same public washroom with no issues. We stopped by an A&W, as far as I can remember. We were sitting beside each other, in a booth with other friends. I was in a real rush to go to the bathroom, and her medicine was giving her a painful stomach ache. I recommended to her that maybe she needed to go to the restroom to help with the pain. We both headed to the ladies’ room, and I have no problems sharing a public washroom with a transgender woman.

I visited that same friend in a Pride House. If you are wondering what that is, it’s a housing refuge for young homeless LGBTQ teens and adults whose parents kicked them out into the streets. Pride House’s rent is paid by the local LGBTQ organization.

I also remember going to my first and only Transgender Day of Remembrance event. As people were naming those who have lost their lives because of their gender, I’ve noticed that many of the victims were Trans women.
