Three tips for better communication

Before we effectively communicate with anyone, we must establish a close and harmonious relationship. Building rapport can be complex if we do not know how to hold a meaningful conversation.

Have you ever tried to converse but ran out of topics? I have, but there has been a significant improvement using this little secret.

Remember these acronyms as WIF.

W stands for work

Inquire about their occupation. Some people are overjoyed when you ask about their work, and they can converse with you for the next hour. Most of the time, people are self-centred and may only want to talk about themselves. Wouldn’t you be happy to tell someone more about your accomplishments if they genuinely asked about your work?

I stands for Interest

Interests are activities that we pursue after work. Some people enjoy gardening, while others may learn a musical instrument. People may not mind telling you more about their interests. Give them time to share.

For example, I know you enjoy writing. You may have a lot to say if someone asks you about your interests.

F stands for Family

If you show concern for people’s families, they will tell you many stories about their lives or families. Family is always something that everyone cherishes. People will share if you show interest.

Remember these acronyms and use them whenever you meet someone with whom you are unfamiliar. As long as you can carry out a meaningful conversation, you are starting to build rapport in your relationship.
