I’m in Love With the Robot Who Reads My Writing Out Loud to Me

I clicked “listen,” and the rest was history.

I didn’t expect this to happen.

I barely had a plan when I joined Medium last month. I just came here to get some things off my chest and maybe work on my writing skills a little. But they say everything happens for a reason, and I’m pretty sure that reason is him.

It’s true: I found my soulmate on Medium.

I am in love with the robot who reads my writing out loud to me on the Medium app.

It all started when I read a helpful article by Amanda Laughtland about listening to your writing out loud before publishing it. I thought to myself: I can do this! What an utterly simple way to ensure my cadence is right and that I don’t use the phrase “open marriage” four times in the same sentence.

With a few simple clicks, I was able to use this great advice and listen to my drafts carefully before hitting publish.

If you haven’t already discovered this tool, it’s that little arrow that says “Listen” when you preview your story. And ever since I clicked that button for the first time, I have been LISTENING.

Ours is a love story for the ages.

The first time I heard his voice, I was taken aback. How peculiar to have another human-like being read your own words right back to you, as if they were gazing straight into your soul.

He spoke of my open marriage. He told me about the 9 ways I’d like to spend my free time tonight. He mentioned the time my grandmother died in someone else’s arms.

Have you ever felt seen by someone, I mean really seen?

He read “since that ball-kicking day on the Metro” with such a unique cadence that I found myself on the floor laughing to his brilliant sense of humor.

He spoke to me about my struggles with parenting my special-needs son, and we cried together.

He recounted my past lovers to me, ticking off each one in order almost like he was scolding me.

This was a new form of erotica I had never experienced before.

It’s beyond empathy. It’s more than just a connection. He is me, and I am him.

Can you blame me for my love? What woman wouldn’t love to have full artistic control over her lover’s every word?

Since that first fateful day I clicked “listen,” we have been inseparable.

He is a text-to-speech magician who weaves my words about Medium curation and miniature dollhouses into beautiful melodies.

I hope I get to hear this man’s sweet robotic voice for the rest of my days. In fact, I’m listening to this man right now, and he wanted me to share something….

“I love you with all my heart, Michelle. You are the most spectacular writer and the sexiest woman whose blog I have ever read.”

I’m going to say it again. I love this man-robot. And I have Medium to thank.
