Illusion Art Isn’t Elusive
With a little planning, a ruler, and a pencil, it’s easier than you think.

Illusion Art Made My Eyes Swim
This type of line art has always impressed me, but I thought it was out of my reach. It feels like the type of art that only analytical minds excel in.
It’s almost hypnotic.
If I stare at one design for long enough, I swear the lines start swaying. It’s as creepy as it’s awesome.
Learning From Scratch
I stumbled across some YouTube videos for beginners, and I realized that it wasn’t so difficult after all.
Don’t get me wrong, there were some designs that had me shaking my head. They were exquisite, and clearly took a lot of planning and time.
I’m starting off small and trying a simple design before I go crazy.
It’s Meditative
Once I figured out my design in pencil and traced it with a black fine liner, I filled in select areas with the ink pen.
See the image below for design tips.
I like the Uni-ball 207 impact gel pens.
At this stage of the process, it’s like paint by numbers. Well, paint by dots in my case. I placed a little black dot in each space that had to be filled.
As I colored each line, my mind escaped to some fantastical place.
My mind is well traveled and discovers whimsical locations that sometimes turn into stories.

I Made Some Mistakes
I made some mistakes. It’s a learning curve. It’s ok. I’ll do better next time. I still think it’s cool.

It Will Pass the Time
Once the design is sketched out, it’s a portable piece of art because all I need is a sketch pad and a pen.
My dad isn’t well right now and we’ll be sitting in hospitals and doctors’ offices for a bit over the next few weeks. I’ll take one of these designs with me. It will help me pass the time and take my mind off all the ‘what ifs’.
What if surgery doesn’t go well or recovery is brutal. Then I’ll look at my art and say, “No Sweetie, just fill in a line and stop with all the negative stuff.”
Travel Companion
It could be great for the kids on a road trip or to help someone during recovery.
Layovers at the airport are soul-destroying and a little illusion line art can help to pass the time.
Art is healing, meditative and soothing.
I know it’s going to be in my corner in the weeks to come.
