Illumination The Publication With Real People & Not AI

Have you noticed how so many of the articles on Medium are kinda generic? All fluff and no substance or all fur coat and no knickers, as my mom used to say. They are all just so samey!

They have awesome but similar titles. They are nicely laid out. They tick all the right boxes and they are found in all the top publications. And yet so many of them leave you feeling deeply unsatisfied. It’s like ordering a steak and being given a biscuit. Sometimes it’s not even a nice biscuit, it’s more like a dog biscuit!

I’ve read some articles that made me really angry. Yes, annoyed with the author for regurgitating waffle, but mostly angry with myself for wasting so much of my time. After a while, the articles all seem to blur into one because they are all so samey.

This is why Illumination is such a great publication.

Medium Snobbery

Now I know there is a lot of snobbery out there. Some writers view Illumination as a publication at the bottom of the pile. They criticise it for having less rigorous editing standards and as a result, you are likely to come across articles with typos or grammar mistakes. Or, heaven forbid, an article written by a non-native English speaker that expresses an opinion not written in perfect English.

To that I say,

“Bravo Illumination!”

Because without the typos, the grammar mistakes, the strange and unusual sentences of non-native English writers, we wouldn’t be able to tell human writers from AI!

AI Writers?

AI grows more sophisticated by the day and there are now lots of AI writing tools on the market. They produce perfectly crafted, grammatically correct and entertaining articles at the touch of a button.

What AI can’t do is to recreate our human flaws & imperfections. Pretty soon, the only way you will be able to distinguish human writers from AI is by their writing errors.

Low Hanging Fruit

Some of you reading this may think of Illumination as low hanging fruit. To that I say,

Wake up and smell the coffee!

I think many of you will have bought fruit from a supermarket that looks perfect only to get it home and discover it tastes nothing like real fruit. It’s the same with writers on Medium. In a few more years we will be praising the writers with blemishes because at least we will know they are real people.

Which is why Medium needs Illumination a place where you find real humans with something to say.
