Illumination — A Publication And Its Culture
I have been writing for Illumination for some time now. Unlike other publications, the authors’ community there represents shared values without losing diversity of opinion. Values instead of opinions as the common denominator — that is the secret of Illumination.
We live in a time where the greatest opportunities and the greatest risks exist right next to each other.
It is far from clear whether we are on the way to a golden future in which we can solve all problems, or whether we are heading for one of many possible disasters that have only become a threat because of our globally networked, hyperactive world.
As an optimist, I see more signs that we, as humans, can actually develop further. I hope for a world in which every vote counts, and every life is equally valuable.
To achieve this, we as humanity need to move closer together and understand each other better.
Illumination represents the values that are necessary to transform our global society. Diversity, Synergy, Fusion, and Serendipity are the core values that the group has adopted.
Diversity
Diversity becomes tangible for me when I exchange directly with authors from all over the world, read their stories, and thereby learn to understand their view of things.
But we are not only from different nations and speak different languages. We also sometimes have conflicting opinions on specific topics.
Nevertheless or just because of this, there is mutual respect at Illumination, which I would like to see in our society in general.
Synergy
I experience synergy with Illumination through the concentrated reach of our social media channels.
Illumination authors are not primarily interested in promoting their own articles, but understand that they add value to their followers by introducing them to the work of other Illumination authors.
Fusion
For me, fusion arises from the new variety of themes I encounter at Illumination.
By reading the work of my colleagues, their thoughts find their way into my world view. Foreign ideas and my own mix and merge into something new.
Some of the discussions that take place in the comments to our articles lead to the realization that not necessarily one is right and the other is wrong, but that the truth is perhaps in the middle.
The scientific idea of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis is lived in the community of Illumination.
Serendipity
Serendipity happens almost daily since I started writing for Illumination and interacting with the other writers.
Commenting on articles, sharing on Twitter, and even applauding for a successful and inspiring article are things that are important to me personally.
Not expecting anything in return is essential, otherwise, Illumination would be like many other random authorial gatherings — everyone would just be thinking, what can I get if I give this or that?
And just when you don’t expect anything, things happen that you never expected. You get into a conversation with someone from the other end of the world, find new information that opens your eyes, or you suddenly have an idea that you would never have had without the article of a colleague.
Takeaway
I have written for many publications since I have been active here. At Illumination, for the first time, I feel like I am more than just a content provider. I am an equal among equals.
I invite you to join Illumination as an author or editor as well.
Experience a vibrant, diverse community where no one is more important than the other.
