If You Want to Succeed on Medium, Start Now

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

Let’s be honest: There is no real definition to “Succeeding on Medium”.

In fact, there is no definition of success at all.

For me, success means reaching the goals I set for myself. Thus, your definition of success might strongly vary from mine.

Some of my biggest goals are freedom of time and location, as well as financial stability, along with achieving an overall healthy lifestyle. These are the things I am working on for more than three years now.

I started my online business in the field of personal development besides my studies in business administration, and ever since I first came into touch with the term entrepreneurship, I knew I wanted to be one of these entrepreneurs. I wanted to do my own thing, be independent, and take full responsibility for my life.

I sincerely believe entrepreneurship is the most significant chance to create a life of freedom and security. No matter if you start a little side-hustle or dive deep into building your own business: It will come with many struggles but also tons of rewards.

Entrepreneurship is one of the biggest drivers for personal growth and, in my opinion, writing is a form of entrepreneurship, especially writing online.

I am convinced right now is the perfect time to start any kind of digital business. However, I decided to share why, in particular, aspiring Medium writers should use this time to kickstart their journey to success.

Yes, we are facing a global crisis, and the coronavirus is impacting lives across the globe. Its effects will very likely last for more than just a few months, and besides the infected, many people will also suffer from financial constraints.

However, just like in any crisis, some people will make use of the situation and come back stronger than ever before.

I know this sounds as if only those who exploit the situation and the suffering of humans could win, but that’s not the case.

Here in Europe, most citizens are in self-quarantine, and as I see from the news, that’s the case all across the globe.

Yes, staying at home can be annoying and tiring, but it can also be a huge chance.

For many people, staying at home for so many hours and days in a row is uncommon as they are used to their standard patterns, which at least include going to work.

However, now is the perfect chance to use our time wisely and invest in our future instead of wasting our time watching Netflix or the news.

Just like any other kind of entrepreneurship, Medium rewards hard work and continuity. Both are not particularly easy to maintain during our normal daily lives, I know.

Yet, right now, you should probably be staying at home anyway, and this makes producing content a whole lot easier.

The earlier you start putting effort into your writing and into building your Medium presence, the sooner you will reap the rewards — makes sense, right?

If you’ve been writing for some while without significant results or considering to start writing, there won’t be a better time to get active than right now.

We don’t know how long the whole pandemic and its side effects will last, but experts report our lives will be impacted for many months. Thus, investing time into your writing, being consistent, and giving your best might pay off very well in these days.

I published my first piece on Medium in July 2018, but I haven’t been very consistent for the following 1,5 years. I enjoyed the process of writing and learning, but I didn’t experience any significant results due to my inconsistency in writing and publishing.

However, in December 2019, I decided to go all-in on Medium.

In my case, going all-in didn’t mean relying on Medium as my only source of income, but it instead means writing and publishing daily.

And here’s the thing: I made tremendous progress in less than three months.

Not only did my writing become way better, but also my stats (and therefore my earnings) went through the ceiling.

Here’s a screenshot of my earnings from the past four months on Medium:

Quite an improvement, huh?

Trust me: If I can do that, you can do it as well.

I am not a native English speaker, and I didn’t get any education on how to write well.

Of course, I’ve put a lot of time and effort into getting these results, but that’s something you always need to do, no matter what kind of side-hustle you start.

Since I made such quick progress, I firmly believe now is the best time ever for new writers to dive deep and create a lot.

Don’t get intimidated by all the negativity going around. Instead, use your time wisely and invest in your future — Medium is just one of the dozens of opportunities you can leverage, but it’s a great one.

Bottom Line

I sincerely hope the majority of the world’s population is taking the current circumstances seriously and avoiding human contact. I believe we must be responsible and well informed these days as this could mean saving lives and the economy.

However, I also hope we all make great use of our time at home.

Being in self-quarantine doesn’t mean being lazy or unproductive.

On the contrary, now is the perfect time to make all the things happen we didn’t have time for during our daily rush.

If you’ve been considering to write on Medium for some time or if you are already into it and want to give your stats a vast boost, use these days wisely.

Take care of yourselves and your loved ones, stay calm, strengthen your mental health as well as your immune system, and type those words you’ve been thinking about for so long.

Use these days to draft many articles, to complete some of them, to improve your writing skills, or to connect with like-minded (aspiring) writers and entrepreneurs.

When you look back at 2020 in December, I hope you won’t say “It was a bad year because of the pandemic.”, but instead think the following:

“It was a good year despite the pandemic and I am proud of how I used my time to build a (side) business.”
