You Don’t Need to be a Professional Writer to Succeed on Medium
Instead, be an entrepreneur
You don’t need to be a writer to write successfully on Medium and use it wisely.
Even though I am getting 300,000 monthly views and making more than $7,000 per month on Medium, I wouldn’t consider myself a writer.
First, I am an entrepreneur. I am not after making money, but I am indeed after freedom. I started several side-businesses at the age of 19 while studying and working full-time. I worked in the mornings, during the nights, and on almost all of my weekends.
Admittedly, I was lucky enough to have my better half as my business partner, and so working on our own projects was our quality time most of the time. (Sometimes, it was the reason for some significant fights, though.)
After working my ass off for two years, I achieved what I desired: Once I finished my studies, I could call myself a full-time online entrepreneur.
I honestly hope I’ll never have to leave the entrepreneurial path. I just feel it’s the right thing for me.
However, besides being an entrepreneur, I am a certified trainer, a coach, and a speaker.
My business is based on personal growth. I’m hosting workshops, giving keynote speeches, creating online courses, and writing to empower people to unleash their full potential, elevate their confidence, level up their productivity, and live a life they love.
Empowering people is my calling. Workshops, digital products, and Medium posts are what I use to share my message.
Some Medium writers are debating about whether a real writer would write for the sake of making money or not.
Well, here’s my take on it: If a real writer doesn’t care about money, I don’t want to be one of them.
Of course I care about making money. We all do.
Don’t lie to yourself. Life is more fun if you know you can afford what you desire without double-checking your bank account.
Yes, money itself won’t make you happy, but without money, you definitely won’t be satisfied as well.
And let’s be honest: How many successful writers would keep writing if nobody would read their work or if they wouldn’t at least be able to pay their bills?!
I wrote more than 200 pieces here on Medium before anyone actually read my stories.
However, I did it because I didn’t have to live off my writing. It was a side-project, one that I truly enjoyed.
I don’t know if I truly enjoyed the writing, but I loved the process of creating something. Each post felt like a unique project, and each time I hit the “Submit” button, I had a sense of accomplishment as if I just finished a little project.
I published my first post in July 2018, and until December 2019, the maximum monthly income I reached on Medium was a little over $200. The monthly average, however, was around $30.
Yet, I still kept publishing.
In December 2019, however, I decided to go all-in on Medium. For me, this doesn’t mean relying on Medium as my only source of income. It instead means doing my best to publish high-quality content frequently.
And you know what?
It was the best decision I made in 2019.
In less than three months, I achieved my first $5,000+ month:

If I can do that, you can do it as well.
I’m not a professional writer, I’m not a native in the English language, and I didn’t spend more than two hours per day to achieve these results.
What Does “Succeeding on Medium” Mean?
A 90% curation rate?
A “full-time income?”
I don’t know if you can define “Medium success.”
We all have different goals, and we all define success in our own ways.
While some people would freak out if they achieved my results on Medium, for me, it’s just the beginning.
Yes, making $7,000 from my writing on Medium is a holy bunch of money. And yes, I like money, but it’s not what I’m ultimately after.
I will keep writing, creating, and inspiring as long as I possibly can.
Currently, my stories get a total of 300,000 monthly views on Medium. That’s incredible, but as I said: It’s just the beginning.
I want to reach a wider community. I want to empower thousands of people to believe in themselves and live a life they love. That’s why I am here, and that’s what I’m best at.
And if you want to start blogging on Medium, I want you to do it.
Don’t get discouraged due to what some people say or write.
There’s no such thing as “being a real writer.”
It’s 2020 and we’re living in a fully digitalized, connected world with access to the internet. You can learn and create whatever you desire. And if you do a good job, you’ll succeed. There’s no other secret.
I know some “real writers” don’t want to hear that, but here’s the truth: If you are connected to the internet, and if you can write, you can make money through writing. Medium is just one of the dozens of opportunities you have.
And through Medium, you can build your own little empire, aka an online business that supports the lifestyle you ultimately desire.
If I make more than $7,000 in a month, you can do that as well. Plus, you can build an email list, gain coaching clients, and kickstart your career as a speaker, consultant, or whatever you desire.
Don’t try to be “a real writer” to succeed on Medium. Instead, define what success means for you and think like an entrepreneur.
Solve problems, chase opportunities, create what people need, strengthen your strengths, learn continuously, invest in your personal growth, connect with like-minded people, and last but not least, give your best every single day.
