If You Think You Can’t Earn Money Writing, Read This!
Be smarter than I was
I was there, too.
Only five years back, I thought it was impossible to earn serious money writing.
Although I wrote an ebook about meditation in the summer of 2019 and invited my parents to Berlin with the money I got from it, I doubted you could actually live from writing.
I believed earning money writing was something for the prolific - a group I didn’t identify with.
It took me another 10 months, 30 proposals, 25 rejections, and one offer, to start earning my living writing online.
Here’s what I wish I knew earlier.
Your mindset is the only enemy
It keeps delivering you handy excuses.
For me personally, it was English not being my native language, not having a MacBook, and not having studied it. What are yours?
I always hated when people said:
“There are people dumber than you, doing what you’d like to do, earning thousands, if not even millions from it, and living their life.”
But now, after earning multiple six figures writing online, I have to admit it’s true.
Despite being dumber than we are, they have one main advantage:
they got going.
They started writing and figured things out along the way.
And that’s the most critical aspect of a solopreneur.
Getting started without being ready.
They’ve realized that readiness will never come.
Being ready is a myth.
The right place to start
When being ready is a myth, you might wonder: “Where do I start?”
I tell you right here and now. Not tomorrow, not when you came up with better ideas or found this one way to fight writer’s block.
Right here and now.
Write. Realize it’s been rubbish.
Improve. Write again. Then again. And again.
You’ll suck in the beginning.
I still suck most of the time.
But that’s part of the game.
That’s not the universe against you; that’s life.
When I started working out, my first 50 workouts looked like I just gained control over my body. In my following 50, I looked like a robot. Then, I looked like a 3-year-old.
Only now, and after countless reps, I know what I’m doing.
The same goes for writing.
You need to sit down and write.
Not for the money or the fame but the joy.
How to keep writing
I still feel your pain.
The pain of feeling inadequate to put out words people want to read. It’s normal; nothing is wrong with you.
We have to push through it. Even if it sucks big time.
How?
By making it a habit. Showing up without questioning if we should.
Brain off, flow on.
Let your fingers do the work for you.
They’ll find a way to write what your heart is saying.
Without doubting yourself.
Repeat it often enough, and you’ll get there.
Everyone can earn money writing when:
- starting earlier than later
- embracing the joy
- getting in the reps
