ADVICE

If You Don’t Find Time; Make It. Here’s How

Firstly, learn to say no.

Regret for wasted time is more wasted time.

Mason Cooley

Time is the most valuable asset we have in life. It took me years to understand this idea. I used to feel amazing when I was playing Fifa video games with friends and spending three hours per day doing that.

I remember I started to be addicted to it. After a job on my way home, I was planning to play one hour before sleep, playing games online after my job was a must.

The problem was I never played one hour. I become a prolific player and winning in tournaments playing with different fellows over the world. That hours after the job become 4 hours per day. When I woke up to work, I was without energy and focused only on who would be my next opponent at night; it was way too much.

I remember I used to lie to my girlfriend that I am going to bed in 30 minutes; it was way more spending in front of the screen and yelling to my team and complaining when I was losing the ballon. She realized and started to be a problem.

I was like this for months, but I realized the unique things I was doing — I was wasting my time.

Once I remember I asked my girlfriend (who now is my wife), please can you throw away the PlayStation while I would go to work today. I knew I could do something better in those hours rather than be in front of the tv playing with someone that I don’t even know to relax and escape from my reality for a period of time.

It‘s dangerous, how many hours you spend in your life doing nothing that will bring you a step closer to your goals or reach them faster.

I started to ask these questions in my everyday life:

Have you ever wonder how many hours of your life are you spending on actions that will bring you closer to your goals?

Are you making actions every day to make your goals or the goals of somebody else real?

Are you saying yes to everyone just to please them?

Are you able to say no, when something is not according to your goal in life?

Those months playing video games taught me quickly, if I dedicated my time to building a business or do something productive, I would get my goals so much faster.

So I learn to choose when I feel that I have to do something that is not according to my goals and how important it can be managing your time if you would avoid doing things that you don’t need to.

I truly believe that time management apps don’t work; everyone is different. It is not a matter of thing you have to do. The most important tool to manage your time is to be aware of the things you do not have to do. Hence you will have more time to do things that really matter.

Don’t take me wrong, everyone needs time to relax, be with friends, even play video games, but if you are aware of the time that you are wasting, it would be fine.

The question is how to gain more time, right, let’s see.

Learn to say No more frequently

How many times I say yes to please someone, even if I really didn’t want to do it. Only for the sake to please them. Hence I did without enthusiasm and focus, and energy. And I was aware of it. I wonder Why I never say no?

A long time ago, I learned to say no to the actions that will not allow me to reach my goals. For example, if you want to lose the way, you can do this:

  • Say no to go for lunch to a junk food restaurant with your colleagues.
  • Say no to play station with your friends; instead, go to the gym for an hour.
  • Say no to watch a movie; instead, watch youtube videos about healthy food.

The idea of saying NO is to replace the activities you used to do that are not aligned with the person you want to be in the closer future.

You can start with that you will see and be astonishing how many decisions you make per day take you nowhere. You are never aware of it.

Billionaire Warren Buffet once said, “The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say ‘no’ to almost everything.” And James Altucher said, “If something is not a “hell, YEAH! Then it’s a “no!” Remember, you only have 1,440 minutes in every day. Don’t give them away easily.

Time is the most precious value in the world, and it doesn’t matter what it means to be successful for you.

  • If successful means have more money, you can prioritize activities that will bring you money.
  • If successful means have the freedom to spend more time with your loved ones, you will also prioritize time to spend with them.

Depending on what means success for you, if that activity will take your time away, it is not going to be worthy.

Avoid activities that waste your energy

This is also true, as I said above, there are a lot of activities or people that just drain your energy, and when you have a drainer close to you, your time is affected, you don’t feel motivated; instead, you feel unproductive. Hence the hours that you spend doing somethings were just a waste of time.

Don’t complain about the time. If you focus on it, it is no matter of time; it is a matter of prioritizing what is essential for you.

If you see these things in your everyday environment, avoid them:

  • A close friend wants to see you, but you know that nothing productive you will get from him. Just favor yourself and avoid it.
  • Sometimes even family who doesn’t support your goals or make fun of it. In this case, you don’t have to avoid them see less frequently. Anyway, if they love you, they will wish the best for you. And the best for you is to achieve your dreams.
  • If you have a meeting at work and you know that nothing productive you will get from them, avoid them. I have been in meetings from my job, and to be honest, all of them were a waste of time. It has to exist a different approach for them.
  • You have to prioritize what is essential for you and detach the things that not and take actions in your everyday life.

You will see that is not a lack of time. The trick is to prioritize.

Conclusions

As I said, the best way to gain more time is not necessary to get the best manager app or a calendar of the market.

The trick is to recognize what activities you are doing in the day that are not aligned with the person you want to be in the near future. And detach them.

Avoid activities that do not bring value in your life are the best time management tools. You will see and never complain again about time.

“The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.”

Stephen R. Covey.

Are you ready to find those activities?
