THOUGHTS
If You Are the Night’s Sky & Other Poems
Three Poems Exploring Music & Love
If You Are the Night’s Sky
If you are the night’s sky, I am the distant star.
If you are the mighty mountain, I am the chiseled rock.
If you are the long winter, I am the flake of snow.
If you are the raging river, I am the flooded shore.
If you are the lush forest, I am the seed of faith.
If you are the promise, I am she who waits.
If you’re the vibrant sunset, I’m the breath that is held.
If you’re the destination, I’m the tentative step.
If you are the orchard at harvest, I am the ripening plum.
If you are the safe haven, I’m the refugee who comes.
If you are forever, I’ll release the hands of the clock.
When yours is the heart that is broken, I’ll be the tear that drops.
[Inspired by Octavio Paz’s “Motion” as translated by Eliot Weinberger.]
As the Sun
You are to me as the sun is to the dawn.
Illuminating the world. Calling forth warmth.
You are to me as autumn is to color.
Each hue that’s expressed enhancing another.
You are to me as the wave is to the sea.
Touching both the shallow and the deep.
You are to me like an exquisite rose.
Seducing my eyes — beautiful to behold.
You are to me as the wind is to the leaf.
Carrying it farther than its tree’s branches can reach.
You are to me as the candle is to the match.
Receiving the flash of fire and helping its light last.
You are to me as time is to the couple in love.
Now is everything, and only forever is enough.
Music Is Solid
Music is solid.
Music is light.
It is love and fear and anguish.
It is solo and orchestral joy.
Music is every word and every language.
It is blue and orange and green and violet.
Music quenches, sustains, and devours.
It is weakness.
It is power.
Music is the dreaming and the awakening.
It is dance, peace, violence, instrument, and memory.
It is loss, exploration, and discovery.
It is none.
It is every.
Music is for the lonely and for the loved.
For the famous and the forgotten.
It is silence.
It is clamor.
It is patience.
It is anger.
Music is foundation and decoration.
It is worship and defamation.
Music is many.
Music is few.
Music is us — it’s me and you.
