If There Was Ever Any Doubt That Republicans Don’t Like Democracy…

This threw it out the window.

So, I woke up on this lovely Friday morning, and one of the first things I saw was this:

That put me in a sour mood straight away, let me tell you.

For those who don’t recognize him, that’s Jack Posobiec, an alt-right commentator and activist who has been a long-time Trump supporter. He spent some time being a correspondent on One America News Network, a news station that manages to be to the right of Fox News, and at one point interviewed a known Neo-Nazi with whom he had helped spread the Pizzagate conspiracy.

Look, I don’t know how much more there is to be said about how much Republicans legitimately want to end American democracy. They have been saying it quietly for a while now, and at this point they’re saying it loudly. What else is there to say? Project 2025 is scary enough without them, and I cannot stress this enough, explicitly saying that they want to literally end democracy.

Of course, he followed it with the standard-issue “glory to god, amen” thing, because all of this is in the name of god somehow. Never mind that Jesus preached compassion and love — that’s “woke garbage” these days. To modern Evangelical Christians, the vast majority of whom are Trumpers, Jesus is “too weak” for modern American Christians.

There is a lot to unpack with how far down the rabbit hole modern American Christianity has gone. I could talk about how Trump is the least Christ-like person I’ve ever seen. I could go on and on about how Trump is their literal golden calf, an idol that they worship instead of the god they say they love. I could point out the parallels between Trump and the antichrist.

Of course all of this has been done before, and I would not be the first, second, or thousandth person to make these observations. Instead, I would like to simply point out that, for a while now, democracy has been an active impediment to the Republican agenda and they have been actively working to kneecap it.

Look at Wisconsin, a state where they have a majority in both state legislatures despite getting less than half of the popular vote. After Citizens United, they used Wisconsin as a test-bed to see if they could gerrymander their way to a majority, and by the gods it worked.

Like Project 2025, Project REDMAP was never a secret. Orchestrated by Karl Rove, among many others, it was designed to do exactly what happened in Wisconsin, among other places, and it was facilitated and boosted by Citizens United. The Koch brothers, along with many other dark-money donors, could pump loads of cash into the project and nobody would be the wiser.

This whole process, an attempt to dismantle American democracy one piece at a time, has been going on at least since Mitch McConnell stood up and said that they would stop at nothing to make Obama a one-term president, if not before. That was at least the start of Project REDMAP, but the drive had likely been fomenting since Reagan tied himself to the Evangelicals and the whole moral majority thing, if not since the Nixon era.

Still, after decades of anti-democratic moves, including everything from opposing the civil rights movement to January 6, 2021, we are now in this moment, where Jack Posobiec stood up on stage and said that they’re going to destroy democracy. Whether they want America to be a Christian nation because they can’t stand the idea of minorities and women having power or because they’ve all bought into the whole “god’s chosen nation” thing, I don’t care. They need to be stopped.

Still, Trump is just the right useful idiot to do all of this. He’s a lifelong con-man who only cares about himself and getting as much power and money as possible, he can work a crowd like nobody else, and he’s easy to manipulate if you make it seem like it was his idea. He also seems to be losing his mental faculties — allegedly, anyway, but his speech patterns and movements seem pretty indicative of his progressing age and failing health.

Convincing grandpa Donald of anything is probably pretty easy when he doesn’t seem to know half of what’s going on most of the time. Comparing him to Biden, who exercises daily and isn’t even four years older, is pretty disingenuous if you ask me — they could’ve gone to high school together, for goodness’ sake — but that’s a whole other piece.

Still, Trump will likely stop at nothing to get back into the White House, and having said that he will be a dictator once he gets in (even if only for one day) gives a whole lot of us a whole lot of pause. He’s got the bulk of Republicans in his corner, and even though they’ve won exactly one popular vote in the past eight presidential elections, they still know what they’re doing to make it a “close” race. Just look at Project REDMAP to get an idea of how much expertise they have at cheating.

Some people commented that, during the 2016 election cycle, Trump’s detractors took him literally but not seriously, while his supporters took him seriously but not literally. I think that, at this point, we need to do both. If he says that he’ll be a dictator on his first day in office, we need to take him seriously and literally.

And, when people like Jack Posobiec say that they want to knock down democracy and replace it with a theocracy, we need to take them seriously and literally. American democracy is at stake here, and if we want this whole experiment to continue, we need to stop Trump and the Republican party in their tracks NOW.

Be well out there.
