Summary

The poem "If I Were Like You" reflects on the differences between the speaker and an idealized, carefree persona, ultimately embracing authenticity and the acceptance of life's complexities.

Abstract

"If I Were Like You" is a contemplative poem that contrasts the speaker's lived experience with the perceived ease and serenity of another person's life. The speaker muses about the possibility of being untroubled by life's challenges, maintaining composure, and experiencing uninterrupted positivity. However, the poem takes a turn as the speaker acknowledges the facade of such a lifestyle, emphasizing that it is an unrealistic, "Insta-version" of life that ignores reality. The speaker reveals their own struggles with resilience, emotional regulation, and the daily effort required to face life's ups and downs. The poem concludes with the speaker's contentment with their own imperfect existence, rejecting the pressure to conceal their true self and the challenges they face.

Opinions

  • The speaker expresses a longing for the ease and confidence they perceive in others, suggesting a societal pressure to appear unbothered by life's difficulties.
  • There is a critique of social media culture, with the speaker pointing out the artificiality of portraying a perfect life online, devoid of real-life struggles.
  • The poem conveys a message of self-acceptance, as the speaker comes to terms with their own vulnerabilities and the effort it takes to navigate life.
  • The speaker values authenticity over the projection of an idealized self, advocating for honesty about one's imperfections

If I Were Like You

A Poem

If I were like you I would let everything roll off my back A careless amoeba shrouded in confidence An undertaker who never takes

If I were like you I would never get ruffled My feathers would always stay in place I would remain undistractable

If I were like you I would be impervious to life and allow all the good to wash over me

If I were like you I would have a calm mind Counting sheep and clouds in blissful meditation

If I were like you I would be effortless Every little single thing would be so easy

But I’m not like you because none of that is real It’s an Insta-version of life where real life doesn’t exist inside the mirrored bubble you portray to the world

I’m not like you because my back does not always allow for a roll and my feathers are often ruffled

I’m not like you because life washes over me but it’s not just the good The bad soaks into me

I’m not like you because I meditate every day and my mind is still far from still

I’m not like you because getting out of bed takes some real effort Not much is easy

I’m not like you because I like the way I am I accept my imperfections and have no interest to live in a world where they have to be better and I have to hide them under my pillow at night so no one will know that I am like you
