Everything is Boring

A Poem

Photo by Gonzalo Arnaiz on Unsplash

It’s hard to wake up to a brand new day when you know for a fact that it’s just Groundhog Day again and Bill Murray is around the corner waiting for you so he can show you the same social media post that he showed you yesterday But then you realize the truth It is a new day but everything is still the same and everything is boring

We all write the same kinds of stories Backed by science, here’s why And use the same hashtags #writingcommunity But isn’t using a hashtag about #writing basically sacrilege (of writing)? #amwriting Nothing is new, nothing is novel It’s all been done before and we are all too lazy to try something different Everything is boring

Even your pose isn’t new Everyone stands like that in a selfie Everyone does duckface Everyone poses near that wall art Why are we so content doing what everyone else is always doing? We should be better than that and if we wanted everything to be the same why don’t we just stare at a blade of grass all day? Probably because it’s not on our phones and because there’s not an app for that One where we can look at a blade of grass growing But on our phones Everything is boring

We are all using the same building blocks and when one person uses a different kind we call them crazy or out of their mind Until they succeed, in spite of us and then we just do what they do because we are so simple and are too busy hustling that we just want someone to tell us how to hack our lives so they’re better But maybe our lives would be better if we stop staring at our phones and stop doing the same things that result in endless procrastination that we call deep work because we read Cal Newport’s book and then ignored the whole thing in favor of something easier Everything is boring

We write about writing Read about reading Create podcasts about podcasting Learn how to learn Talk about talking and we wonder why everyone would rather check Twitter and then rage Tweet a string of expletives to feel better I think it’s all because we finally realize that everything is boring
