Summary

Michelle Monet shares her personal journey and philosophy on writing as a tool for self-discovery, learning, and growth, emphasizing the intrinsic value of the writing process beyond external validation.

Abstract

Michelle Monet, a writer who did not follow a traditional educational path, has found profound personal growth through writing. She views writing as a means of self-education and self-discovery, a process that allows her to learn about various topics and herself. Monet has committed to a disciplined writing routine, publishing daily on Medium with the intention of evaluating her progress after six months. She outlines potential outcomes of this endeavor, including a renewed focus on her memoir, continued joy in writing on Medium, or an integration of her diverse writing interests. Monet believes that writing is a powerful tool for healing and education, and while reader appreciation is a bonus, the primary benefit lies in the writer's own development.

Opinions

  • Writing is an effective method for structuring thoughts and refreshing one's perspective on life.
  • The act of writing is likened to receiving an education without the associated costs, providing a sense of self-directed learning and personal fulfillment.
  • Monet equates her current writing practice to attending her own private writing school, highlighting the importance of daily discipline and commitment.
  • She values the growth that comes from writing, viewing it as a way to evolve both as a writer and as a human being.
  • Monet acknowledges that sharing stories and being vulnerable can inspire and educate others, though this is seen as an additional benefit rather than the primary purpose of writing.
  • She reflects on her past as a disinterested student and contrasts it with her current enthusiasm for learning, suggesting that passion for a subject can transform one's educational experience.
  • The author expresses that writing helps her to discover, and rediscover, herself, which she finds to be a compelling reason to continue writing.

I Write to Find Out What I Think

Isn’t that enough?

“The best way to think through an idea is to write about it. Writing structures our thinking and what we think refreshes us — with meaning and purpose” — Saleem Rana

I just realized that one of the reasons I love writing so damn much is that I can take a topic, any topic, research it, let my mind and fingers fly, write the story and then inevitably — learn something!

In the process of writing I always end up teaching MYSELF something.

I always LEARN.

So, not only do I write my thoughts I learn what I THINK about a topic which then leads me to grow as a human.

This is cool.

I believe we discover (and recover) ourselves through our writing.

It’s also a bit like getting an education without paying for it. I never went to college and I was not a very focused student in high school. I think I was a C average student. I just skated by with no real desire to learn most subjects. I was a daydreaming artist and musician.

Now, at my age of 57 I am like a sponge. I love learning.

My new writing discipline feels a bit like I am in school again too — but it’s my OWN private writing school! Just like in school I know I MUST show up and do my assignment daily, which is my disciplined writing.

I made a commitment (to myself and for myself) to publish a minimum of one story daily on Medium recently. I decided to do this for 6 months. After the first 6 months Ire evaluated things.

I realized that many outcomes might occur after the 6 months like:

  1. I will realize I am ready to dedicate myself to my memoir again.
  2. I will continue writing happily on various subjects on Medium.
  3. I will combine all of my writing loves together! (My Musical, books and essays)
  4. Medium will somehow go belly-up and I’ll go figure something else out. ha-ha

One thing I am sure of is this:

I will learn a ton and I will grow as a writer and a human being!

It is clear to me that I write to learn, grow and heal. If others get something valuable out of it or are somehow inspired, entertained or educated that’s a bonus.

But, more than that, writing about any subject helps us to discover more about ourselves.

This is enough of a reason to write!
