I Was Wrong About My Oscar Predictions, But I Enjoyed the Movies a Lot

An overview of winning categories in the 2024 Academy Awards

A few days back, I penned down an article discussing my thoughts on who might bag the 2024 Oscars, all thanks to Denise P King’s inspirational story. The name of my story was A Movie Makers Oscar Predictions. I made predictions by taking into account both the audience ratings and the critics’ opinions. However, I was wrong which did not bother me.

In my article, I kinda thought “The Holdovers” (you know, the one directed by Alexander Payne) would win because of its awesome ratings. But then I couldn’t help but wonder if “Oppenheimer” (the one by Christopher Nolan) might snag the award, ’cause it was super hyped up in the media before and after it came out.

I won’t cover every award category, just the ones I think are the most important for movie lovers. I’ll break down each award category and give you all the juicy details about the winners too.

An overview of winning categories in the 2024 Academy Awards

Best Picture

Among ten of the best movies of the past year, the award for Best Picture went to “Oppenheimer.” My mentor Dr Mehmet Yildiz was so fond of this movie and he told me that it would win as a comment in my story. He was right although he is not a media person like me.

In case you haven't seen it, let me give you the synopsis. During World War II, this big-shot military guy, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr., puts physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in charge of the super-secret Manhattan Project.

Oppenheimer and his science squad spend years working on this crazy project to build the atomic bomb. Finally, on July 16, 1945, they saw the first-ever nuclear explosion and bam, history was never the same again.

Best Actor in a Leading Role

The award for Best Actor in a Leading Role went to Cillian Murphy for his performance in “Oppenheimer” as J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor known for his roles in movies and TV. You might recognize him from “28 Days Later” or as the Scarecrow in the “Batman” movies.

He’s also been praised for his work in indie films like “The Wind That Shakes the Barley.” People appreciate his ability to play all kinds of characters, especially the intense and complex ones.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

The award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role went to Robert Downey Jr for his performance in “Oppenheimer” as Lewis Strauss.

Robert Downey Jr. is a famous American actor and producer. He’s best known for playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel movies, starting with “Iron Man” in 2008.

Downey has also starred in films like “Sherlock Holmes,” “The Avengers,” and “Tropic Thunder.” He’s known for his talent and charm, both on and off-screen.

Best Actress in a Leading Role

The award for Best Actress in a Leading Role went to Emma Stone for her performance in “Poor Things” as Bella Baxter.

Emma Stone, born on November 6, 1988, is this awesome American actress. You’ve probably seen her in movies like “Superbad,” “Zombieland,” and “Easy A.”

She’s also been in “The Help” and “Birdman,” which won her an Oscar. Emma’s known for being super versatile and having this cool, witty vibe in Hollywood.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

The award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her performance in “The Holdovers” as Mary Lamb.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph is this awesome American actress and singer. You might’ve seen her killin’ it as Oda Mae Brown in the Broadway show “Ghost: The Musical,” which got her a Tony Award nomination.

She’s also been in movies like “Dolemite Is My Name” with Eddie Murphy and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” People love her for being so charismatic and for always giving these amazing performances.

Best Directing

The award for Best Directing went to Christopher Nolan for directing “Oppenheimer” which was selected as the best movie of the year.

Christopher Nolan is a famous filmmaker known for his cool movies with mind-bending stories. He was born on July 30, 1970, in London, England. Nolan got big props for making “Memento” in 2000, which was all about its crazy storytelling.

He’s also the brain behind “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception,” and “Interstellar,” all known for their deep ideas and awesome visuals. Nolan’s all about using real stuff, not just CGI, to make his movies feel real.

Best Animated Feature Film

The award for Best Animated Feature Film went to “The Boy and the Heron”. If you haven’t seen it, here’s the synopsis.

After Mahito’s mom passes away, he moves to his family’s countryside estate. Strange things start happening, leading him to an old tower where a mischievous gray heron lives.

When his stepmom goes missing, Mahito follows the heron into the tower and discovers a magical world where the living and the dead coexist. Join Mahito on this epic journey as he learns about this mysterious world and himself.

Best Original Song

The award for Best Original Song went to Billie Eilish for her song called “What Was I Made For?” which appeared in “Barbie”.

Billie Eilish, born December 18, 2001, in LA, is this super cool American singer-songwriter. She hit it big with “Ocean Eyes” in 2016. People love her deep lyrics and unique style.

Her album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” won her loads of Grammys. Plus, she’s a major fashion icon and totally rules pop culture.

Conclusions and Takeaways

As a filmmaker and movie enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate the Oscars every year, gathering with friends who share the same passion for cinema.

It’s become a cherished ritual for us, though it’s not without its critics who argue the selection process is subjective and biased.

However, I believe the true value lies in experiencing the nominated films and forming your own perspective.

Ultimately, it’s not about who takes home the awards, but rather the profound messages and entertainment each film brings to the screen.

As a filmmaker and movie enthusiast, I find great joy in reviewing movies. This passion project allows me to delve into the intricacies of filmmaking and share my love for cinema with others.

As Denise says “push yourself and immerse yourself in the art of film. You will not regret it.” I agree.

I look forward to reading your perspectives too. Enjoy your movies! Thank you for reading my story.
