I Want to Live Like a Poem
Poetry is not a shortcut
I want to live like a poem: Urgent and efficient Short and sweet Or a one-two punch As needed
I want to live like a poem Lilting, breezy like dandelion seeds Softly landing on lawns Declaring my place in your world
I want to live like a poem Purposeful Making each word Each sound, each beat count Winding down the road of cracks And bumps and potholes Proud of each bruise Each scar I’ve earned And the patchwork I’ve done Along the way
I want to live like a poem Brave and unapologetic Taking whatever path I need To get to me To get to you A poem, like a labyrinth Is not a shortcut It’s a maze Forever shifting And the lines change every day
