I Used A Leaf For Fairy Wings

How this project came about.

Leaf for Wings- ©Duvy McGirr

This little withered leaf full of character with stains and holes caught my attention immediately when walking through the park.

As soon as I picked it up from the ground, I thought this would make perfect wings. When I arrived home, I decided to scan it in a flatbed scanner instead of photographing it because the leaf was a bit warped.

I then remembered an old print of one of my nieces that I took some time ago while doing film photography with my old analog camera. My niece was modeling in a woody area, leaning against a tree. She was wearing a princess ball gown that reminded me of a fairy. All she needed were her wings.

I scanned the image of my niece to convert it into digital format. I challenged myself to see if I could add these “wings” to the picture. I know these composites are imperfect, but I’m working on my need to want to perfect my work, so I’m sharing anyway.

Creating composites like these is a long process, and it would take me forever to show you how I make them. However, I want to include the original images to show all the extra elements.

I used these three images to create the Fairy of the Meerkat composition.

Large eyes and a small mouth and nose are among my favorite things to create a fictional character, like in anime, facial expressions of innocence.

I used these four images to create the Fairy of the Pelicans composition.

Each Fairy has a spirit animal.

I used these seven images to create the Fairy of the Doves composition.

My fairy project is ongoing, and it’s simply for fun. I just wanted to share some of my favorites so far.

I believe that challenging my imagination sets me free in a world of endless possibilities. I love to take a simple picture, even if it’s not a great shot, and see something in it to create something dreamy and surreal.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this surreal Fairy photo project. I also hope this will spark some ideas of your own. See where it takes you.
