I Tried 3 Side Hustles This Year
2021 is definitely the year of the side hustle. This year I tried 3 new side hustles. Keep reading to learn what they are, how it went and if I’m still doing them today.
Let’s go!
Why start a side hustle?
The money of course, right?
I just started reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I hear it’s about making passive income streams. I’m only on page 26 so far.
I’ve always been a big supporter of having multiple income streams so more than the money each side hustle can bring, the opportunity to have a new stream of income is super important to me.
Here’s what I tried…
- Selling on Gumroad
- Selling on Etsy
- Making money on Medium
My Gumroad store
This is it…

I created 2 ebooks that I started trying to sell on Gumroad.
Previously I tried Sendowl for my online selling.
My experience was ok but, I didn’t like the recurring monthly cost to host my ebook. That’s not the case with my free Gumroad membership. I only pay them a small portion of the sale when a customer buys.
I created a credit ebook and a flipping ebook.
The credit ebook quickly got flagged as that kind of content isn’t supported by the Gumroad platform. The flipping ebook didn’t start seeing sales until months after it was published.
To be honest, I didn’t have any kind of formal launch for it.
My plan was just for it to be a low maintenance income stream that would bring in some money from time to time and that’s what it’s doing now.
My Etsy experience
I’ve talked about how Etsy has gone before here on Medium.
Basically, I tried a few different niches in the digital products space and they all flopped.
Some were more successful than others but none saw enough success for me to continue paying listing fees and ongoing Etsy fees for the future.
So, I scrapped it all.
I think to be successful with Etsy, you really have to think outside the box and sell products that are unique or have a unique twist to something common or current events.
My Medium money-making journey
It’s been great so far but I just started making more than a few bucks per month back in August.
August made me $30 roughly.
September was around $430.
October was $2,775.
It’s been a nice progression but, I’m writing a lot and putting a lot more effort on Medium than I ever have before.

What’s next?
I’m usually up for a good challenge especially if it’s about starting a new side hustle.
If anything interesting comes up, I will probably try it and if I do, I’ll report my results and personal experience here.
What interesting side hustles have you started this year?
I hope you enjoyed reading this. If you’d like to support me as a writer, consider signing up to become a Medium member. It’s just $5 a month and you get unlimited access to Medium.
