Tim Maudlin shares a personal story of survival and community resilience after a tornado, highlighting the power of a T-shirt as a symbol of healing and inspiration.
Abstract
On March 2, 2012, Tim Maudlin experienced a day of terror when a tornado struck his hometown, miraculously sparing his sons but claiming the lives of five neighbors. The following day, he learned a profound life lesson that he wishes to impart: the power of a T-shirt to inspire and heal. Maudlin recounts how T-shirts became more than just clothing in the aftermath of the disaster, serving as conduits for causes and symbols of community solidarity. He introduces his book "T-SHIRTS THAT INSPIRE: The $89,000 T-shirt," which details the story of a T-shirt that played a pivotal role in the recovery of his town. Maudlin reflects on the metaphorical strength of T-shirts in various challenging situations, from natural disasters to personal health battles and social issues.

I Thought I Had Just Killed My Boys!
When I saw it, my heart sank. I thought I had just killed my boys!
I took this quick picture just before running downstairs.
Friday, March 2, 2012, is a day I’ll never forget. The day a tornado ripped apart my hometown. My boys didn’t die but five of our neighbors did.
The next day, March 3, 2012, is also a day I’ll never forget. Because on that day I learned a lesson that changed my life. A lesson I want to share with you.
The late Fred Lebow, founder of the New York Marathon said,
Never underestimate the power of a T-shirt.
It’s a fascinating metaphor. I’ve tapped into that power over and over. A T-shirt is POWERFUL but it’s not the cotton, the color or the cut. It’s something else; something that goes deeper than the composition of the shirt.
A T-shirt can truly inspire. And T-shirts have inspired me. From natural disasters to terminal illnesses to domestic violence, I have found that T-shirts can be an integral component of healing, encouragement, and inspiration.
My name is Tim Maudlin. T-shirts That Inspire tell the stories of T-shirts that have inspired me. T-shirts that have allowed me to do what I can. T-shirts that have helped me to do good.
For a small town devastated by an EF-4 tornado, a t-shirt can be a CONDUIT TO A CAUSE and a SYMBOL OF COMMUNITY.
