MEDIUM

I Take Back Every Bad Thing I’ve Said About Medium’s ‘Recommended’ Article Feed

They should’ve told me the real reason the posts are recommended for me.

The algorithm never made sense. Why Medium gives me these dated meta-Medium articles as ‘recommended for you’. Why do they want to recommend articles written over a year ago by those I’m following? They have written hundreds of articles since.

I misunderstood the recommendations. It wasn’t because they thought I’d get something out of reading them.

It’s because Medium is trolling me.

The algorithm saw how I opened an article to WTF at the author’s gripes with clap counts. It then suggested I read a few from authors hating on highlighting. It wasn’t until another clap count complainer said to not bother reading their stuff that I finally broke down and wrote my Medium Manifesto:

This was not a one time deal. After publishing that, I got an article suggested to me ranting about satire on Medium being bad. NOT SATIRE. Again, another WTF clickbait recommendation from Medium to get me to read an article I cannot believe someone wrote in all seriousness. Which lead to what?

Key Message: Medium’s ‘recommended for you’ articles could be encouraging you to springboard onto a new post. Or it could just be that Medium’s recommendations are awful.

I accept coffee bribes.
