TRAVEL

I Stopped Doing These 6 Pointless Things For Trips

It was all a waste of my time

If I can simplify my trips in any way, I will jump at the chance.

Preparing for any trip is no easy endeavour. Packing your suitcase alone can be frustrating enough.

There were some things that I used to do when I was preparing for a trip. I realized they were all a complete waste of my time. It never ended up being useful for me at all.

I no longer do these things anymore. Easy, right?

Updating Music Playlists

I always listen to music. When I first started travelling, I used to make sure that my stash of music was updated. Then I realized that 9 out of 10 times, I didn’t listen to my playlists at all! It’s way too loud on a plane for me to enjoy my songs. I usually end up sleeping or eating. Then the rest of the time, I’m out and about and enjoying the sights and sounds. I don’t end up listening to music at all.

Packing Too Many Extras

We always think about packing extra shoes, clothes, underwear, and socks. I have never run out of any of it before! I reduced the number of extras I was packing. As a result, my luggage was lighter and I stressed less because it was easier to pack. I will bring an extra pair of socks and at least two pairs of pants for a week-long trip. If I need anything else, I can always buy it. I’ll even have a souvenir, win-win!

Packing Makeup and Skincare

I used to pack the whole arsenal. It would end up being a huge and heavy bag. Then I thought, do I need to exfoliate if I’m gone for a week? It’s probably ok if I don’t do it. I still bring some skincare and makeup, but it now all fits in a small bag. I simply don’t bring along all the products anymore. Lugging around a bag of bottles isn’t exactly fun.

Bringing Paper Maps

I get it, it’s a backup situation. It might even be crucial if you’re visiting a place with less than ideal internet services. I do remember using paper maps before Google maps. But in more recent years, I have almost completely stopped using paper maps I’ve brought with me. I do use maps of local places or for buildings and attractions though. I suppose I rely on the internet too much?

Printing Too Many Documents

Before I went on a trip, I’d print out a stack of documents. The papers would include car rental confirmations, hotel bookings, itineraries, pre-booked tickets and many other things. Soon enough, I realized that I wouldn’t even look at the papers. If I needed them, my first instinct would be to whip out my phone and pull up the documents from there.

Reading Guidebooks

I used to visit the bookstore and check out some travel guides. Nowadays, I read up online and mark down important points on my trip spreadsheet. That’s really all I need!

I love travelling with less and simplifying the trip process. If I really don’t need something, I won’t bother with it. When I’m on a trip, I prefer to enjoy the moment and relish in the sights and sounds. I vote for simple!
