I Medium Constantly

I Spend More Hours on Medium Than Sleeping

I’m Proud of That, It’s Bad-Ass

Here I am at 11:17 pm, writing one last blog for the day here on my favorite platform. I have the Lakers/Spurs game going, and my cuddly dog Libby laying against my leg.

I should go to bed. It’s been a long day.

I wrote and published two Medium blogs earlier today. I got a content writing piece done. I made Grandma’s Big Gay Vietnamese cheeseburger dinner for The Boy’s last night at home before going back to U of I for 3 weeks. My daughter had a friend over who was in town from Utah. Busy night.

And here I am for the night shift, regardless of how busy the day was. I was planning to just check comments, follow more writers as I do every day, and read some stories. But I find myself writing at 11:20 pm.

I can’t help it. It’s in my blood. It’s what I do. I’m on Medium more hours a day than I sleep.

I was thinking about that a few minutes ago and smiled. That’s a pretty cool thing to be able to truthfully say. It makes me feel proud of what I’ve accomplished so far in my first year of writing.

I sleep seven or eight hours a night. I am one of the fortunate ones who can always fall asleep and stay that way for the entire night. It’s always been that way. It’s rare to wake up and not instantly fall back to sleep.

Let’s assume I’m getting eight hours a night of sleep. That means I’m on Medium at least 8 1/2 or nine hours a day. Is this possible?

You bet your ass it is.

I wake up each morning, pour myself some coffee, and get Libby a treat. She’s conditioned me to believe that when I pour a cup of coffee, she deserves a treat. She has that stare that is hard to deny. We move upstairs for coffee and Medium.

I check my notifications while drinking coffee. While my eyes are trying to focus clearly, reading your awesome comments and drinking my bean juice sure helps with that. Then, once the first cup is half gone, I move on to approving the stories that came in overnight for Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Blogs.

This can be anywhere from five to ten writing pieces. I’ve seen over a dozen come in overnight before. We have writers from all over the world, so it makes sense. I work on proofreading and publishing them all as I finish that first cup of joe.

Time for a refill. After we mosey downstairs and Mooch convinces me of her need for a second treat while I pour Coffee #2, we get back to reading more Medium stories, and answering any comments we haven’t gotten to yet. I keep at that until I realize it’s almost 10:30, and I still haven’t started writing.

I’ll either have an idea in mind that I thought of from the previous evening, or I’ll check my drafts and decide if I want to write about any of the eight to ten ideas I’ve saved. Sometimes I do. Or I call an audible and start writing about something within a minute or two of thinking of it.

Like I’m doing with this. Now it’s 11:30.

Yep, I thought of this idea no more than 15 minutes ago. Sometimes when inspiration strikes, it’s best to start writing about it. I’ve been doing better about that, lately. To hell with when I last posted, or having to do it at a certain time of day. When I have an idea, I want to write about it immediately.

I’m fortunate to be able to do exactly that. There aren’t too many parts of my normal day that I can’t pick up my laptop and start typing, once something pops into my mind. That’s awesome.

This lends itself to me being on Medium a LOT. Especially factoring in time for editing, doing a second or third draft, proofreading, picking out pics to use, and approving writing for two publications.

Speaking of which, have you visited our new one? Bouncin’ and Behaving Poetry Society is kicking ass for such a new pub. We’re actively accepting anyone who has poetry to share or is considering starting to write. We welcome you, just let us know if you’d like to be a part of it, and I’ll gladly add you as a writer.

So after writing, editing, and publishing my first blog of the day, I’ll check for more stories that have been submitted to BBB or BBPS. Then back to reading comments. At this point, it’s somewhere around noon or 1 pm. I’ve been at this for about four hours, usually.

Lately, I’ll take 30 to 60 minutes to do a content writing piece or two. Yes, I know it’s lame. Sure, it can be boring. But I’m growing to appreciate it more, as I’m learning the limits of Medium earnings. I’m not going to complain, but if I can make $30 to $50 for a short time of content writing, it beats what I’m earning on Medium most days.

But I’m always glad to return to Medium by early to mid-afternoon. I often think of something better for my second blog of the day. Perhaps it’s difficult to pick a great topic first thing in the morning. I love taking the time to write a second one, though.

By the time that one is written and published, I’ve been on Medium for about six to seven hours. After making dinner and coming upstairs to chill, I may spend anywhere from three or four hours checking comments, reading, and commenting on articles. Perhaps even another hour, if I decide to write a third blog for the day.

Such is the case tonight. It’s 11:42 pm now. I need to wrap this up, to have time to proofread it, find a few pics, apply the tags, and publish it to Bouncin’ and Behaving Blogs.

It was another nine or ten hour day of being on Medium again. And I fucking love it. Maybe I’ll do it again tomorrow. It never feels like work when I love doing it.

Sleep can remain secondary. I’m all in with Medium. Good Night, Y’all. &:^)
