BEHIND THE BOOK — WEEK OF APRIL 3Rd

I Read A Sci-Fi Book Written By An Astronaut

And it was out of this world!

Welcome back to Behind the Book, the weekly series where I review my recent reads.

This week, I read a great sci-fi book written by an astronaut.

Let me tell you about it:

The Apollo Murders is a space thriller by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. It’s set during the Cold War in an alternate reality where NASA is about to launch Apollo 18.

Goodreads

If you’re unfamiliar with your space-race history, NASA’s final Apollo moon mission was Apollo 17. So, Apollo 18 never actually happened. In this book, Hadfield draws upon historical research and his knowledge of spacecraft to imagine what an Apollo 18 mission would have looked like.

The story follows three astronauts on a mission to the moon to stop a secret Soviet space station from spying on America. But, the closer they get to completing the mission, the more death and destruction seem to follow them wherever they go.

This book is unlike anything I have ever read before. It’s the sort of book that only an astronaut like Chris Hadfield could have written. It’s chock full of technical spaceship details and pilot experiences, all things Chris Hadfield is familiar with.

The story switches between what is going on in space and on Earth. This made for an interesting mix of a high-stakes space thriller and a political drama.

I don’t want to spoil too much of the book, but I will say that I enjoyed the direction Hadfield took the story and all of the twists and turns along the way. His alternate historical reality was exciting while also feeling like it had a lot of elements of truth in it.

Because the book is a more technical than some other commercial sci-fi, I think you would fully appreciate this story if you were a huge space nerd (like me). If you are interested in reading this and are a bit intimidated by the details though, the audiobook is narrated by Chris Hadfield himself and is probably the best way to get into the story.

If you couldn’t tell, I really enjoyed The Apollo Murders. The more I think about it, the more I love it. I’m so glad I read it!

I’m currently reading Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. After waiting for months, I was finally able to get an audiobook of this from the library.

Goodreads

It’s told in an interview format and follows the rise and downfall of a fictional band from the 1970s, Daisy Jones and the Six. The audiobook is full-cast which is incredible for this story format. I’m a third of the way through the book and already enjoying it.
