I Reached 500 Followers Before 2024. This Is How

Easy but not so easy, I guess…

From Adobe Express

This is a little recap of the strategies that got me from a bit over 200 Followers to 500+ Followers in less than two months.

The background story

It was late October. I was itching to write something, so I came back to Medium.

At that point, I had a bit over 200 followers. I started my account in June, wrote a handful of articles, and then took a break to get situated with my new job.

I wrote four posts and went on about my day.

On November 10, I checked my bank account and saw a transfer for $3.11. At that point, all my old articles weren’t paywalled. A handful of stories had gotten me $3.11? Not bad.

On November 12 I decided to start an experiment. I would try to write at least one article a day, every day, until the end of the year. See what happens.

November wasn’t a lot better, just $4.04. But December just closed, with the astonishing amount of….. $65.56. More than 10 times more!

Not only that, I met my goal of publishing at least once a day and reached 500 followers sometime yesterday. Right in time to greet 2024.

At that point, I had fellow writers checking my follower count as closely as I was, eager to see me make it to the magic number. I love this community!

The strategy

How did I get here?

I published every day, sometimes more than once

For well-established writers, this is not necessarily needed, but when you are starting, you need practice. Also, you need to see which topics you are best at putting into words. What resonates with your audience?

I kept in mind quality, mind me. However, I must admit that having been paid to write at work for the last 10+ years helped with the endeavor. And 25 years of journaling experience is the cherry on top of the cake.

That said, I had to work around a 9–5 and two highly energetic toddlers… So there were also some challenges, don’t get me wrong!

I engaged the right way

I’m preparing a post about this, but I made sure to engage with writers with similar interests to mine, writers who are more likely to read something I write.

I made sure I read their posts and left meaningful comments. When a writer interacted with me or followed me, I checked their posts, found one that resonated with me, and intentionally read it.

Read more about how to engage the right way below. Especially about how not to hurt your account while doing so.

On top of this, my stories were added to multiple publications and linked to other people’s posts. How? Well, I made sure to answer calls in time when someone asked for articles on a topic I had covered.

So, engaging at a higher level.

What’s next?

Well, I don’t like setting goals that don’t fully depend on me. I would love to reach 5,000 followers by the end of the year, but that’s something I can’t control. There are way too many variables at play.

So here are my goals:

  • Try to keep going with my now 51-day writing streak on Medium. For as far as I can. But be nice to myself if I don’t.
  • Read and genuinely engage with 3 stories every day.

Where will this take me? I don’t know, time will tell. I’m here for the fun!

Stay tuned if you want to find out.

Happy New Year, y’all!

Hey there! I hope you enjoyed my story. If you did, why not give me a follow and subscribe to my publications? That way you won’t miss any of my quirks in the future. Thanks for reading!
