Engagement, Done Wrong, Will Hurt Your Medium Account

Avoid this terrible mistake

I check my Medium notifications. Oh, this fellow writer liked one of my posts. I’m excited. But not for long. The same writer has applauded on 10 of my other posts… in 2 minutes.

I’m pissed. On trying to help, this writer is hurting both his and my account. How?

How does Medium work?

After the most recently implemented changes, Medium estimates that someone has read one of your posts if they have stayed on the page 30 second or more. If so, this will count as a read.

Yes, they have a way to know that!

If the reader also leaves a comment, applauds, or highlights, you get more “points.”

If you are part of the Partner Program, these points translate into earnings. And for everyone, including Partner Program members, it helps the Medium algorithm decide whether your content is good enough to be pushed to fellow readers.

How do you hurt the author?

By opening multiple posts and clapping on them almost simultaneously, you are showcasing that you didn’t read the content (you didn’t stay on each of the stories for more than 30 seconds). Therefore, the view-to-read ration for the writer will decrease.

Seeing that a lower percentage of people who see your stories and read them signals that your content lacks quality. Therefore, it won’t be suggested to any more readers.

Trying to help (or be seen), you’ve screwed the writer and their hard work.

How can you help authors?

Instead of opening multiple articles and clapping on all them, if you want to help someone, slow things down.

Check their titles. Which one resonates with you the most?

Open ONLY that article and take some time to, at least, read the introductory and closing paragraphs.

Does it sound interesting? Great, read the whole thing. Make sure you don’t jump onto another article too fast.

Did you enjoy any sentence in particular? Great, highlight it. Have something to say? Comment. Be genuine.

This type of engagement will help the author because someone is viewing the story and deciding to stay and engage. It showcases interest.

How do you hurt yourself?

By opening one story after the other, and clapping without reading, you become a red flag. This reader wants to get attention.

And you know who is also constantly seeking attention? SPAM.

So yes, the Medium algorithm will think that you are SPAM.

Wait, Medium employees will check my account and see that I’m not SPAM, right? No, they won’t. There are millions of users on this platform, they just CAN’T check everyone’s account.

So here’s where machine learning comes in handy. If you act like SPAM, you will be tagged as such.

Two things may happen then. You either get banned and asked to probe that you are human, or worse, you are shadow banned.

What does shadow banning mean? Well, in a nutshell, you’ll have your account, but Medium won’t show your stories to anyone. You won’t know it, but you may sense it when you get no reads.

In a nutshell…

If you want to support fellow writers and receive more views, engagement is a great way, but if done the wrong way, it will hurt your account.

Instead, spend some time reading other writers and genuinely engaging. You may find some fascinating stories that help you achieve your wildest dreams!

Hey there! I hope you enjoyed my story. If you did, why not give me a follow and subscribe to my publications? That way you won’t miss any of my quirks in the future. Thanks for reading!
