I published 87 stories in 19 days for a new pub
I share my insights and 8 tips for new writers
I was blessed and selected to become an Editor for the New Writers Growth of Ideas publication on Medium on September 21, 2023 by the awesome ASAD EDUCATE.
I was already following his work when he announced the creation of his new publication. After that, he called for new writers and then more editors to help with the onslaught of submissions. I was open for new opportunities to grow as a writer and get back to being an editor of work other than my own. So I volunteered for the job.
The position was underrated.
From what I understood, I was going to be a part of a team of editors (up to 10 max) — to help each other, learn, grow, and build a following and a network of cool writers. What really happened was that I became the main editor of the publication, unbeknowst to me, and that it was my job to create a set of editorial guidelines to follow and submission guidelines. Though my purpose was to not take over in a sense, I ended up in this role, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier and more excited.
Asad must have seen something great in me to be comfortable with me handling editorial direction.
I am not a beginner in my field. I have over 15 years of experience being an editor-in-chief, co-editing, website/blog management, content creation and management, and community management. However, this is the first time that I am an editor to a large group of writers on a single platform.
I edit, proofread, and publish about 6–8+ submissions a day from writers to the New Writers Growth Ideas pub. I’ve learned so much and read the thoughts of so many people in these 19 days as an editor. Beautiful people.
As a writer and editor for the New Writers Growth of Ideas, it’s important for me to share my advice on how to help other writers become better writers and to then become editors themselves.
Here are 8 tips to help:
- When using photos in your article, always include photo caption text. This not only helps give reference to the source, but also protects yourself and Medium from copyright issues. I’ve had to reject some submissions because of no photo captions text.
- Before sending a draft or published submission, proofread and edit for grammar, contextual, and display errors. Don’t send a blob of thoughts, an unedited 1st draft, to a publication. Think of a publication like a newspaper or popular news blog that is seen by millions of people. Its a professional step up then posting on your own profile.
- If you are part of the Medium Partnership Program, make sure to turn it on when you are submitting your work or turn it on for that story when its published. You don’t want to leave money on the table.
- Always follow the submission guidelines. When joining a publication, you agree to follow the pub’s rules and guidelines (as mentioned in the post call of writers). This includes submitting only 1 draft/published submission daily.
- Respond to comments or notes from the editors. I’ll be honest, I’m still trying to figure out the notes feature, but when I do, I’ll be sending private notes to writers about their submissions. Responding to comments of your work (constructive criticism) helps build rapport and community. Your writing will definitely improve.
- Join a group chat or group page for the publication. It’s a great communication and learning tool. You’re able to interact with other writers in the publication. Sharing tips for growth, mental health, craft, and your work in a fast-paced way.
- Stay within the topics of the publication. Don’t submit any topic you want because you just want to get it out there. Unfortuntely, I’ve had to reject many stories because they were not on topic.
- Comment and respond to comments on your fellow publication writers stories. You build a quality following and viewership that way.
With these tips, writers will be mindful before they hit the publish button, and have more resources at their disposal.
I’m so excited to continue being an editor and I hope to churn out as much content as well.
