I Made 216.67$ In September With Medium! Thoughts and Lessons Learned
If you like writing, attract attention to your articles and build a following — go for it!
There are so many reasons to write and publish on Medium! This month was the best month so far. I made $216,67. I am writing on Medium since around February 2022. Here’s how I got this far and what I learned along the way.
How did I start writing on Medium?
To be honest, I don’t remember exactly how I got here. But I am thinking it’s because of YouTube videos. At this time, I was trying out YouTube and posting a few Videos there on my KnowledgeCollective Channel. I didn’t see a lot of growth on my YouTube channel, so I started to search for other ways to help people, create mind-expanding content and also make some money with something I loved doing.

How much money can you make with your articles?
I was trying different topics I was interested in. I am writing about philosophy, science, spirituality, self-improvement and in general: mind-expanding content. As long as it’s something that you are interested and are willing to share, you can write on that!
But it is a lot of work! I am trying to find time between my job as a system engineer in IT, family, friends, other hobbies and my relationship. So sometimes it was hard to find the time to write an article. But once I start, I can’t stop anymore. I get into an undescribable flow where I just keep writing without thinking. But you have to be consistent, that’s the main thing. Only then you can get results.
I think your main focus should not be money, but love, passion and discipline. If you love what you are writing, there will be a lot of benefits: 1. You will love to share your knowledge with others 2. You will publish it for FREE! 3. Furthermore, you will write much better articles (and also give more value) 4. You will have readers and become famous (in a good way!) 5. Likewise, you will start to get more results from all your writing efforts
What’s also important to note is that the algorithm of Medium isn’t perfect and can sometime out of nowhere make one random article of yours go viral, while the others just get 30–150 views.
For example, most of my last articles made just between 1-$5, but this one went viral, and I got 3000 views + $100!:

I mean, I am writing about stuff I love. As I said, some of my favorite topics are self-development, spirituality, philosophy and science. But sometimes I got this feeling that nothing moves anymore, and it’s hard to get interested in something new. I am working on this too!
In general, I am interested in everything that can help me grow as a human being or expand my knowledge while doing something else which is fun and enjoyable. But sometimes, the internet is so huge with so much information that I just lose interest.
It happens to me a lot that I just have no idea what to do. And at the same time don’t have time to do it! So it’s hard to get motivated sometimes.
How to overcome this:
1. Set up a timer on your phone with a countdown from 30 minutes. You have to write or try something new for this time. A big problem is that we don’t even start. We talk too much without trying. Try something. Maybe it’s a mistake, but you will learn from it! As soon as you get into the flow state, you will love it and suddenly the time is over and you want to do more!
2. Only work on one article at a time! If you have too many ideas, you will have no idea where to start.
3. Before starting writing, take some time and think about what kind of articles you want to write. Once you know what to write about, it’s easier to start writing!
