I Kept a Secret From My Father

Don’t worry, it’s a life-saving secret.

In 2010, my father fell very sick and lost a massive amount of weight. He had been a cab driver all his life. After my mother passed away when I was about 18 years old, he worked hard to take care of my sister and me.

I noticed during that time, he would go to work as usual, drive for less than 2 hours, and then come back to rest. He said to me, “Son, I don’t know why I feel extremely tired.”

It went on for a while. I told him, “Why don’t you quit and retire? I can manage to take care of the daily expenses.” He agreed and returned his cab after 35 years.

Things didn’t improve. His appetite was bad and he started to lose his temper at times. I suggested he go for a check-up. He angrily replied, “I don’t know how to go for a check-up and there’s no need either.”

I ran out of ideas to bring my old man for a check-up. I quickly thought of one person, my uncle, who is his second elder brother. They have been very close since they were young.

I gave a call to my cousin (my uncle’s son). “Bro, I need your help urgently. My father is very sick and refuses to go for a check-up.”

He replied, “Ok bro, let me call my father ASAP.” The next day, my uncle came to visit my father and chatted with him. The following week, there was a medical appointment for my father.

He openly asked the doctor if he could have a full check-up to find out what was happening to him. In my heart, I thought, “Finally!”

After the check-up, he was diagnosed with TB (Tuberculosis), a disease that causes lung infection.

The symptoms are as follows:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Persistent fatigue and tiredness
  • High temperature (fever)
  • Weight loss
  • Night sweats
  • Persistent cough lasting more than three weeks, often resulting in phlegm that may be bloody

The causes include:

  • Drinking
  • Smoking
  • Overwork, not enough rest
  • Dusty working environment

Thank God, after the diagnosis, he was treated with six months of antibiotics. He followed the instructions and regained his health. I can’t imagine what would have happened if my father had remained stubborn.

This secret weapon was useful to my father. He respects his second elder brother a lot. His brother speaking once is better than me speaking 10 times. Thanks to my uncle for saving his brother as well.

Dr. Christine Chuckle inspired me to write this story. It also shows us that each of us has someone we will listen to. I hope this can help you out if you face the same situation. Below is her story that I would like to share with you. Thanks for reading
