I Keep a Secret From My Husband
Don’t worry, it’s a wholesome one
My husband and I, well, we’re like any other couple. We’ve got this good thing going on, and I’m even tight with his folks. Now, I wouldn’t call him a mama’s boy in the clingy, overbearing way. No, it’s more like he’s got this healthy appreciation for his mom.
You know how life can throw a couple of gloomy days your way? Well, my husband isn’t exempt from that universal experience. Most of the time, I can pull out my bag of tricks and get him smiling again. But, every now and then, he needs a bit more than just my usual antics.
Lately, he’s been stuck in one of those rough patches. It’s got something to do with his hometown, and after a day of trying to lift his spirits, I figured, “Okay, I’m not the expert on this one, and he needs a different kind of ear.”
So, like I’ve done countless times before, I shot a text to my mother-in-law. I let her know that her son wasn’t having the best time and that a phone call from her might just do the trick. You see, they’ve got this special connection, and she has this uncanny ability to say just what he needs to hear.
Fast forward to today after I trudged home from work. There we were, the husband and I, lazing on the couch, engrossed in some TV show, when I heard his phone do its thing. The man’s voice went from a bit meh to downright cheery. I could hear him chatting away happily, then a bit more serious as he sought her advice on his hometown blues.
After a good while, he waltzed back into the living room, wearing a contented smile, and dropped this bomb: “That was Mom. She’s got this radar, you know? Always knows when I’m feeling a bit off and just what to say.”
Let me tell you, it warms my heart to know that this little conspiracy between my mother-in-law and me actually works. Seeing him transform from a bit down to feeling cherished and secure is like winning the emotional Olympics.
So, here’s the thing. If your cup’s full enough, if you’ve got a bit of extra love and care stashed away, don’t forget to sprinkle it on someone who needs it. You never know the difference a call, a chat, or just a bit of thoughtful advice can make. It’s the small stuff, the mom’s-magic-type stuff, that can turn a day around. And that, my friend, is the absolute best feeling.
