I Got Paid $200 in Book Royalties From Amazon in March 2022
Here’s what I learned
Self-publishing on Amazon KDP has been a learning experience for me. When I published my first book a little more than 6 months ago, I knew nothing about anything.
I didn’t know how to
- Run ads (still am not that great at it)
- Do newsletter swaps with other authors
- Get free book promotions
- Do book launches
This list of things I didn’t know how to do was endless.
Fast forward to March 2022 and Amazon sent over a nice $200 payment from my book sales in January. It’s my highest payout from the platform so far.
While this money doesn’t mean I’m anywhere near proficient at navigating KDP, it does show progress. The amount I earned in the previous month was $72 in royalties.
I’d like to share some of what I learned just in case you’re thinking about self-publishing.
Get reviews first
Books are just like any other products sold on Amazon. A lot of good reviews will drive buyers to make a purchase.
Getting reviews can come in a number of different ways.
- I sometimes offer deals to my newsletter subscribers.
- I use Amazon deals to make my books free for a limited time and hope the buyers leave reviews.
- I beg family members to buy the book and leave a review.
No matter how you look at it, a review is a review. Those four- and five-star reviews go a long way in generating more sales.
Genres matter
As Amethyst Qu continues to reassure me, fiction does way better on Amazon than nonfiction. It’s actually laughable how much better fiction does. So yay if you’re a fiction writer.
As for me, someone who doesn’t plan on writing fiction, this is another hurdle I have to overcome.
I’m going to focus less on my genre and more on writing high-quality books that I think readers will enjoy while expanding my catalog of books.
Marketing is half the battle
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Marketing your e-book is half the battle.
Writing it is tough enough, but you won’t get many sales if you can’t get your title in front of some potential buyers.
Running ads on Amazon is one way to do it. It’s a trial-and-error process that has resulted in more error than success for me. But I’m slowly getting better at finding profitable keywords and increasing my daily budget.
You can also try paying for email blasts using services like Bargain Booksy deals on Written Word Media. I actually had a lot of success doing this and would/should do it again.
Before launching your book, I suggest having some kind of marketing fund that you’re prepared to spend — and lose — on promoting it. Marketing costs are a necessary evil all authors have to pay.
Create more products
My first book offers an e-book version, a print version and an audiobook.
My second book offers an e-book version, a print version and an audiobook is in the works.
I’m even considering bundling both books together to create an entirely new product.
Why?
Because the more products I have to offer, the more chances I have to make sales. I did double-digit sales in the first week of having an audiobook without any marketing. Some people clearly wanted the book but just didn’t want to read it. Find out more about that below.

With no marketing involved

The more products you can offer customers, the better chances you have of getting sales.
At least that’s what I’ve found.
What’s my next move?
Creating a free e-book.
It seems like a great way to get my foot in the door for new buyers since I’m still an unknown author. If they like my free e-book, they might be more inclined to pay for one of my other ones.
But I’m still so exhausted from typing my second book that I haven’t started on the free e-book at all.
That’s the last thing I learned. There is no rushing to success on KDP for a small-time self-publishing author like myself. It’s a process that’s going to take years and I’m OK with that.
