How I Hit Double-Digit Sales During My Audiobook’s Launch Week
With no marketing involved
I recently wrote about using ACX to produce an audiobook as a passive side hustle.
If you read the story, you know I was in the process of creating an audiobook for my book. I was looking for a narrator to help me produce it since I naturally hate the sound of my own voice.
Well, I’m happy to report that the audiobook was launched two weeks ago on Audible and to my surprise, I’ve already sold nearly 20 units.
Did I expect this many sales? Hell no.
Am I happy about it? F*** yeah.
Especially because I haven’t run any ads for the audiobook, I haven’t directed any traffic toward it and I haven’t even told any family members about it yet.
So how exactly do I have this many sales already?
No, really. How did I do it? Please, someone fill me in.
The popularity of audiobooks
I’m a believer that many of us just don’t like to read. For one reason or another, reading is not on most peoples’ daily agenda.
So it makes sense that in 2020, more than 71,000 audiobooks were published in the United States, a 39-percent increase from 2019, according to Publishing Perspectives.
This increase is similar to the rise of podcasts over the last few years. It’s way more convenient while you’re stuck in traffic to put on an audiobook than it is to pull out a paperback book.
How to get more audiobook sales?
For starters, to make an audiobook you’re going to need the basics: a book. It’s way easier to make on on ACX if your book is already listed for sale on Amazon.
One way I think I’ve gotten a nice number of audiobook sales so fast is because I found a great narrator. Their voice is awesome and they fit the tone of my book perfectly.
I believe I was able to pull such a great narrator because when I put my book up for auditions, it had recently gotten a couple sales. The Best Seller Rating on Amazon was under 100,000 because of those sales.
Narrators are more likely to audition for better-selling books because that means there is a better chance of the audiobook selling and them getting in on the income.
Since I found a great narrator, when potential buyers hear the audio sample it really pulls them in.
Lastly, a great cover always helps. Whether you’re selling a regular book or an audiobook, make sure your cover stands out from the rest. It’ll help drive more sales.
Audiobooks have been great to me — so far
Publishing an audiobook has paid out for me in these first few weeks. I really didn’t expect much from it but I’ve earned a nice little chunk of change just by putting it together.
My narrator has also earned some fast money from the work he’s put in. It’s an awesome side hustle for those who have been considering narrating an audiobook and earning royalties from their voices.
I’ll keep you updated in the future about how this develops. Maybe I’ll run some ads for it soon?
