I Found Myself Living In 3 Different Wine Regions Across The Globe

Wine Not?

Authors Image- Vineyard in Waiheke

It hit me the other day that I had lived in a wine region in a few countries I have called home.

It was completely unintentional though.

I have never been the biggest wine drinker but I definitely made the most of living in such close quarters to so many vineyards!

Not a bad life ay?

Here are 3 of the wine regions I lived in across 3 different countries.

Barossa Valley, Australia

I moved to Barossa Valley to do some farm work. I didn’t do any research before moving there but it was only once I arrived I realized that this was a wine region.

To get to the hostel we had to drive under a sign that said: “Welcome to Jacobs Creek” which is a well-known wine brand.

Next door to our hostel was a winery called Chateau Tanunda where we were able to go wine tasting whenever we pleased.

There was an abundance of places to go for wine tasting in the area but this one was the most convenient as it was right next door.

There was a viewpoint where a group of us would always go to watch the sunset. There were a few hikes around too where we would see kangaroos and snakes.

The town itself was really small and was my first experience of living in such a small town- especially for someone coming from London. I got used to it and actually enjoyed the small-town vibe for a while.

Waiheke Island, New Zealand

I knew that Waiheke (nicknamed Wineheke) was a place full of vineyards, but that wasn’t what initially drew me there; it definitely was a great perk though!

I wrote about my time living on Waiheke Island here:

Again there were many vineyards dotted all around the island and they all had such beautiful scenery surrounding them.

A couple of the vineyards had events where there would be a DJ and people would be dancing, that was always so much fun.

Waiheke is paradise, filled with nature, vineyards, and is surrounded by the ocean, which only adds to its appeal.

Okanagan Valley, Canada

Again I was completely unaware of the fact that the Okanagan valley was revered for being wine country in Canada.

I lived in Osoyoos for a short while, which is the southernmost region of the Okanagan Valley.

It is home to the warmest lake in Canada. Also here’s a fun fact, Osoyoos is the only desert in Canada and is the warmest region of the country.

There weren’t just vineyards here, there were also many farms and orchards. A lot of fruit that gets distributed in Canada comes from here.

Again there are many places to sample the wine here and it is quite unique in that the backdrop was a desert and so not what you would expect when you picture Canada.

I was trying to decide where I enjoyed the wine the most, but it is too hard! They all had a little something that I really loved and were all so unique in their own way.

You would think that I would be a sommelier after staying in these renowned wine regions but sadly I am not.

I am however keen to explore more wine regions in different countries because the whole experience of wine tasting and being in a beautiful setting is something I could never get sick of!
