This Is Island Life And I Can’t Complain
What life looked like living on Waiheke Island
During my time in New Zealand, I lived on Waiheke Island for just over a month and it really was a fun and unique experience.
Waiheke is a 40-minute boat ride away from mainland Auckland but the vibe is completely different in comparison to the city.
Waiheke is known for its many vineyards and wine (some people nicknamed it Wineheke) but it also boasts beautiful beaches and ocean views too.
I moved there with a friend who knew someone that lived on the island and had a small place we could rent. When I say small place, it was literally a tiny room with two beds squashed in what little space there was.
I couldn’t complain though, we lived right on the beachfront, all we had to do was walk across the road and there we were right on the sandy oceanfront.
I really love living by bodies of water, especially when it is the ocean.
Waking up to the sea breeze and the sound of crashing waves on a daily basis was invigorating for my soul.
Walking around the island was a workout in itself.
The island is made up of many hills some of them being quite steep. We were constantly breaking out in a sweat every time we decided to walk to another part of the island as we didn’t have a car. At least we were getting our steps in!
There is also a viewpoint on the island where you can actually see Auckland in the distance which was pretty cool.
Auckland and Waiheke seem but a stone's throw away from each other, yet are two completely different worlds. One is a typical city and the other is a nature lover's paradise.
Of course, I couldn’t go to Waiheke and not go wine tasting, when in Rome right?
There are many vineyards across the island and we tried to visit as many of them as we could.
I am no sommelier but I thought the wine on the island was pretty great!
We indulged in beer tasting too which was really fun and interesting to try all the different types of beer.
We also dabbled in a little olive oil tasting, as there are many olive groves on the island and they create their oils there, a lot of olive oil in New Zealand is imported from Waiheke.
It was always great to head to the beach to unwind after a long day of wine tasting and bread and cheese eating.
We also passed this very strange sign but I guess it sends a convincing message. Must have happened after a few wine tastings!
I loved the fact that we were able to catch the sunset every day from the comfort of our little accommodation, it was always a great way to end the day.
I probably would have stayed longer, but then New Zealand just announced their lockdown so my friend and I decided to leave and move to another part of New Zealand, but that is a story for another time!
