I Dreamed About Crystals, So I Bought Some
My collection includes amethysts, moldavite, and malachite

A dark-skinned woman stood behind a table filled with crystals. There were amethysts, rose quartz, and hundreds of other minerals in various hues and sizes.
She was having a giveaway, which I learned by reading a sign near a large bowl filled with crystals. I’m only 5'2'’, so I had to stand on my tiptoes to peek inside her glass bowls. The booth owner noticed and struck up a conversation.
“Have you been doing some karmic work?” she asked as I admired a group of multi-colored crystals on her table. They were a pastel rainbow hue that changed colors when you moved.
I nodded and said yes.
“Looks like it,” she replied. We discussed karmic matters for a bit, but then it was time to leave. I was disappointed, as I was enjoying our conversation. I looked for a pen and paper so I could leave my contact information, but I couldn't find one.
Then I woke up from my dream.
I couldn’t remember much that morning, but the dream felt important. I wasn’t completely sure what karmic matters were or why we discussed them, but I initially thought the elderly woman was talking about karma. In my dream, she corrected me and explained that karmic work wasn’t the same as karma.
I remembered that part of the conversation, but the rest was a blur. All I knew was that I needed some crystals, though I wasn’t entirely sure why.
In the spiritual community, people say crystals find you when you need them. I guess that’s why my amethyst pendant reappeared shortly after my vivid dream. I hadn’t worn it in months.
The pendant was an impulse buy from my local farmers market a few years ago. I bought it after my son refused to part with the purple rock we found at Target. Like most of my crystals, the amethyst has an interesting backstory.
One morning, I was on Instagram looking at pictures of vibrant purple crystals that kept appearing in my feed. Instagram usually just showed me recipes and crafts, so the crystals were unexpected. After seeing multiple pics, I decided I was going to buy an amethyst soon.
I was on a tight budget due to my custody battle, so I had to wait. However, I didn’t plan on waiting too long. Purple was my favorite color, and I thought looking at a pretty purple rock might help me relax on court days. In the meantime, I needed to spend my money on household essentials and legal costs.
I headed to Target to buy some toilet paper and pulled into an empty parking spot. For some reason, I didn’t like the spot, so I drove to a completely different row. This was out of character for me since I always park in the same section, and I even choose the same spot whenever it’s available.
We parked, and my kids followed me out of the car. A moment later, I noticed my middle child was holding a beautiful purple stone. It looked like some of the crystals I had seen on Instagram that afternoon.😮😮😮
“Where the heck did you get that?!” I asked, confused.
“It was right there when we got out of the car,” my son answered, pointing near the curb.
We decided we were meant to have the amethyst. “It’ll bring our family good luck,” I told the kids as my son shoved it in his pocket.
That’s when our fascination with crystals began. A week later, we found chunks of sparkling geodes scattered along our path.
My son was thrilled. “God keeps sending us good luck!” he said, collecting shattered geodes from the ground.
“Apparently,” I replied, staring at the ground in surprise.
We don’t live in an area where geodes are common. In fact, I’d never found one before that day.
Two years later, it was time for my collection of rocks and crystals to grow again.
I woke up exhausted from a night of back-to-back dreams. My dreams were intense, and I traveled the area speaking with different people.
“You need moldavite and malachite,” a man told me. We had been discussing recent events as well as childhood trauma, and after months of recurring flashbacks, I was ready to heal.
I woke up immediately after hearing the man’s advice, but I was a bit nervous. I had heard bad things about moldavite, and I wasn’t familiar with malachite. I mean, I could recognize both pieces, but I didn’t know what malachite was supposed to do.
A quick Google search dubbed this blueish-green gem the stone of transformation. Ah, no wonder the random guy from my dream thought it would pair well with moldavite. Moldavite is notorious for uprooting lives.
However, malachite doesn’t promote chaotic change the way moldavite does. It’s a powerful stone, but it’s also a protector. Malachite helps align your heart chakra, which can get blocked by painful past experiences. It also helps the throat chakra, so you may find communication easier.
I’m a writer with a brain injury, so I’ll try anything at this point. I headed to Etsy and began searching for tektites and crystals.
An hour later, my digital cart was filled with moldavite, malachite, and citrine. The citrine was an impulse buy along with the gemstone-adorned candle that found its way into my cart.
I also bought some essential oils from a holistic nurse who claimed they’d help with vertigo and brain fog. If they didn’t work, at least I’d smell great at physical therapy and neurology appointments. Don’t worry — I’m still taking my Propranolol.
As I loaded the tracking screen for my package, I realized I probably shouldn’t tell people how I choose my crystals. In fact, I probably shouldn’t even tell people that I own crystals. It’s too controversial, and some folks don’t understand that you can appreciate science, religion, and the spiritual world. You can love God, take prescription meds, and believe crystals help you heal from past trauma.
You don’t have to choose just one label. Do what you want, when you want. If surrounding yourself with crystals makes you happy, why stop? It doesn’t matter if the benefits of amethysts and emeralds aren’t backed by science.
I buy rocks and minerals that I see in my dreams, and I’m okay with that. That’s not surprising when you consider my middle name — Crystal. It’s not just a random moniker. My estranged mother named me after the sparkling figurines in her china cabinet.
I think about this as sunlight hits my rose quartz, making it shimmer on my nightstand. I wonder what my dreams will bring tonight.
