Super Mario Bros. Movie Introvert Review
Tears and Laughter: My Mario Movie Experience 2023
I cried during the Super Mario Brothers movie. The movie was exactly what I expected it to be.
Dumb
Predictable.
But also surprisingly heartwarming.
Let me explain why I went to see the movie in the first place. As a vandweller spending time in Las Vegas where the temperature in my van feels like 100 degrees, I often look for budget-friendly indoor activities to escape the heat.
A $5.25 Tuesday movie seemed like a good deal.
There were a few other movies that I would have considered seeing instead of the Mario film, but my adult son told me he was going to see it, so I thought it would be a good casual conversation topic for us.
As an introvert, movies with more action than words tend to overload my senses, but the Mario movie wasn’t too bad in that regard.
I found myself reading Medium articles on my phone under my jacket during the movie, taking advantage of the cool air conditioning.
I looked up from my phone occasionally to see Mario, Luigi, and the sidekick mushroom gearing up for action and preparing to fight the big bad monster who is in love with the blond hair, blue eyed Princess.
You know how the story goes. Spoiler alert: the underdog wins.
But what really made me cry was the portrayal of the close relationship between Mario and Luigi, who are depicted as loving and supportive brothers.
As a mother of two sons, I could relate to their bond, and it made me emotional, especially considering that my sons are close.
I cried when Mario and Luigi reconnected in the movie, and even during the scenes where the family was eating at the dinner table.
I also cried because some of my own close family relationships are strained at the moment.
I guess I’m just really sensitive right now, and the movie touched me on an emotional level.
Another spoiler alert, and on a funny note, I laughed out loud when the dog got after Mario and Luigi, that sheesh was hilarious.
One more thing I didn’t know Mario and Luigi were plumbers.
If you saw the movie, I would love to know what you thought about it.
