I built a 5 figure income stream in a weekend — Here’s how
I created a new five-figure income stream and it only took me a weekend to create. Let me tell you how I got the idea, what I’m doing and how much I’m making.
How to create a business in a weekend
A lot of business ideas don’t take that long to set up. You have an idea, you make a plan and then put it into action.
That’s the idea behind this business.
It’s ebook selling.
I had a little experience creating and selling ebooks before. I decided to try my hand at it again and see how far it can take me.
Little did I know, a few months later, it would be a five-figure a year income stream I added to my bottom line.
Why write ebooks?
They’re incredibly easy to create.
You could literally combine your top 5 or so articles on a topic and make it into a book.
I’ve done this for clients before, believe it or not.
For me, I had a niche that I was pretty knowledgeable about. I already had a course around the topic but, it was a little bit of a higher price tag ($247).
Not a huge investment for an online course (I’ve seen thousand-dollar courses) but, it’s still a nice chunk of change and I can see why there’s some reluctance to invest.
So, I wrote an ebook on the topic and made it for beginners.
It was a hit!
The second book came out of a case study I set up that became a hit and is expected to reach $100K this year!
How much I’ve made from ebook sales
Here’s a snapshot of the number of sales (total ebook sales from 2 books) I had in April…
This is with barely any marketing.
I don’t have any sales funnels in place yet. Very little email marketing and no paid marketing at all. It’s all organic.
$900/month x 12 months = $10,800/year income stream
I hope to make at least $10K this year from this ebook income stream.
Here’s my 5-step process for writing ebooks in a weekend.
How to write an ebook in a weekend
Before you churn out an entire ebook in a weekend, there’s got to be some planning in place, first.
I start with a brainstorming session first. This is to figure out what I’m going to write the book about.
There are a handful of side hustles and topics I’m pretty good at that I can teach others so I usually draw from one of those.
Some other places to do research for writing an ebook are:
Once you pick a topic, you’ll follow these 5 steps to write your ebook.
Step 1. Create an outline
This outline is a rough sketch of how your book will be laid out.
List some ideas/topics you want to cover, start grouping your ideas into chapters, and do some research to see what kinds of questions your readers will have about the topic.
Visiting a site like AnswerthePublic.com can you help you come up with a big list of questions to address in your book.
Step 2. Write your book
Just write.
Don’t worry too much about formatting here.
Just get the content on paper and out of your head.
Group it into chapters as laid out in your outline and just do a big drain dump onto a Microsoft Word or Google Docs document.
Step 3. Editing and proofreading
In this step, you’re going to comb through your book with a fine-tooth comb to edit it to perfection. You’re also going to want to proofread it well or hire a proofreader to do this for you.
When you’re done, it’s time to package your draft into a book!
Step 4. Design your cover and compose your book
You can do this in a few different ways.
For the design…
- Use Canva or another graphic design tool
- Hire a graphic designer
For the composition of your book…
- Do it yourself
- Outsource this activity to a pro
Step 5. Pick a platform to sell your book
I have used Sendowl and Gumroad before.
Currently, I use Gumroad and I really like them.
You can write up your sales page write on Gumroad and they handle collecting payment and the e-delivery to your customers.
The last part of the process is to market your book. I do that by sharing my book periodically to subscribers on my email list. I use Convertkit as my email provider. I also have a Substack.
Other than light email marketing, I do content marketing through Medium and my personal blog.
There are plenty of routes you can take to promote your book including paid marketing. You can experiment with any marketing path you wish but, email marketing and content marketing are what I have done and had success with.
Takeaways
Building an ebook business in a weekend is possible.
Full disclosure, not all ebooks can be created in a weekend. Mine tend to be quick guides that can be read in a few hours but, if your book is meatier, it might take longer to write and develop.
This is a fun, lucrative side hustle to try out and once you have your book ready to be sold, it now turns into passive income!
