Summary

The author discusses a lucrative side hustle of building and selling basic websites for a profit of up to $200 per hour.

Abstract

The website-building process, as described by the author, is a straightforward method of creating simple, often content-less, websites using pre-made templates. These sites, known as starter sites, are designed to be sold quickly, often within an hour of work, for prices ranging from 100 to 200. The author emphasizes that this side hustle, which they have been engaged in for nearly a decade, can be highly profitable, potentially earning 1,000 per week by dedicating just five hours to the task. The business model involves website flipping, where one creates a site with the intention of selling it on marketplaces like Flippa. The author outlines the necessity of time investment, a small budget for domain and hosting, and a Flippa account to facilitate sales. Success stories, including that of a student earning 300 from their first site, are shared to illustrate the potential of this venture.

I build boring websites (for $200/hour?)

The website-building process is easier than you might think. At least the way I do it.

I don’t know coding, I cheat by using pre-made templates, some of the sites I make have no content at all, yet they sell for hundreds of dollars as starter sites.

And, most of the time, they take no longer than about an hour or so to create.

So, $100 to $200 for an hour of your time? Yep.

What if you dedicated 5 hours/week to this? Would it be $1,000/week?

Possibly.

The sky’s the limit with this, really. I’m going to share exactly how I do this side hustle that I started almost a decade ago.

Building boring websites for profit

It’s website flipping.

Here’s how it works…

First, build a site. Next, sell it. Lastly, profit!

This is NOT:

  • About coding
  • Building intricate webpage after webpage to create a detailed, large website
  • Creating a website that you keep for yourself

The point is, from the start, you’ll be building a website that you intend to sell.

Now, do you have to sell it?

No.

You can keep it if you’d like. You may want to use it for a personal project or develop it over time to sell in the future.

That’s totally fine but, that’s not what I’m talking about here.

I’m talking about building starter sites that you build quickly and sell quickly.

What you’ll need to create a website flipping business

You need:

  • Time
  • A small budget
  • Access to Flippa

This is a solopreneur venture that you can run on your own.

How much time you dedicate to this project is up to you. It can be an hour a week, ten hours a week, whatever you want.

In the beginning, as you’re learning how it all works, it will take you more time. You’re learning and as you get better doing this, you’ll get faster.

An investment will be required, as well. Building a website takes resources. You’ll need a domain name and web hosting.

That’s going to cost you money.

I host many sites with Siteground and pay about $30/month but, there are hosting plans from $3 to $4 monthly. And, many times the domain is included in your hosting plan.

To start, if you have around up to $50, you’ll be set.

Then, you’ll need a Flippa account.

Flippa is a marketplace where buyers and sellers come together to conduct business. Sellers can sell their websites, domains, apps, and businesses.

This is the magic to selling your site quickly.

There are other ways to do website flipping not using Flippa but, I’ve had a lot of success with Flippa and that’s the platform I recommend using.

Is $200/hour really possible?

Yes.

Starter websites can go for hundreds each so making $100 to $500 per site is definitely within reach.

One of my students from my course made $300 on her first starter site!
