What I’ve Learned So Far

I have made nearly $40K from Flippa and more than six figures from selling websites, in total.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far…

What’s Flippa and how can you make money from it?

This is Flippa.

Flippa.com

It’s an online marketplace where you can buy and sell:

  • Websites
  • Domains
  • Apps
  • Businesses

I made money from Flippa as a seller.

I create websites, list them up for sale on Flippa, and sell them.

You can sell on Flippa at auction or classified listing. There are fees for listing on the platform and they take success fees at the end when you sell but in all, I think it’s a pretty good setup.

I like Flippa because it’s easy to use, the fees are affordable, and it’s a great way to get exposure for your website, and your business and connect with future partners.

Flippa is not the only way to sell websites

This is only one of the many ways you can sell your websites.

There are other marketplaces similar to Flippa and other sites and places online where you can sell your site.

But, if you’re looking for a cheap, easy way to sell your site fast, I really think Flippa is the way to go.

How I got started in website flipping

I quit my job for my business.

I started an online boutique alongside working my full-time job and about a year later my business was making more than my job, so I quit!

That business was tough.

I got it up to $30K+ per month in revenue and it was a lot of fun but, when they say you trade a 40-hour work week in your job for a 90-hour work week in your business, that really can happen.

It happened to me!

I wasn’t working 90 hours a week but I was working far more than my 40-hour day job.

It put a lot of strain on me and my family, impacted my work-life balance, caused me health problems, and more.

It just wasn’t a fit for me anymore so I sold it (not through Flippa).

After that sale, I went after the next thing, which was blogging.

I started building blogs.

And, selling them (through Flippa and other ways).

That’s how my love affair with Flippa started.

There’s something about building something from scratch, developing it then selling it for profit.

You build something from nothing and profit from it.

Super rewarding.

And, a very fruitful end.

I love it!

That’s how it all started for me.

Now, I teach others about website flipping.

There are two approaches I take:

  • Build and sell established sites: These are sites that I drive traffic to, monetize, and sell over the long term. These websites usually sell for up to thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. Here’s my course for that. Coupon Code: MEDIUMSENTME for 10% off
  • Build and sell starter sites: These are quick, easy-to-build no income, no traffic sites. You build them and turn around and sell them. These are less valuable than seasoned sites and go for up to hundreds to thousands of dollars each. Here’s my ebook for this. Coupon Code: MEDIUMSENTME for 10% off

Why I love flipping websites

  • It’s introvert-friendly.
  • You only need a team of one, yourself (solopreneur-friendly).
  • It’s affordable (low startup capital).
  • Not tech-heavy (tech-friendly for beginners)
  • Anyone can do it.
  • You can create a part-time or full-time business for yourself

What are the drawbacks?

It’s not for everyone.

If you can’t picture yourself sitting in front of a computer, spending up to a few hours a week on this project, then website flipping might not be for you.

If you’re looking for a no-startup cost kind of business, this won’t be for you. You can do this with a modest budget ($50 to $100) but, you will need a budget.

Flippa is the secret sauce but, it’s not the only way to website flip. If you live in an area where Flippa doesn’t work (a Flippa-restricted country), then you won’t be able to use the site for selling sites but, there are other sites to use and other ways to explore.

Seven lessons from making $38K+ on Flippa

  1. Work what’s working: I look at Sold listings on the site, all the time. It tells me what buyers are looking for. Then, I might model my sites like those for a quick sale.
  2. Research is key: Along with looking at Sold listings, I also look at what’s trending, and what’s popular at the time. It’s a great trick for niche selection.
  3. Using tools is priceless: I don’t mind investing a little bit of money to save time and speed up the time to profit. Examples: AI writers like Jasper, paid themes, etc.
  4. Upgrades can work (but not always): You can upgrade your listing on Flippa. There’s a standard price and an upgrade price which gets you more perks and more exposure. It works, but it’s not like a magic pill. It’s worth trying if you want to see the results to judge for yourself.
  5. Your positive feedback rating is important: But, it might not matter as much as you think. First, every buyer won’t leave you a rating. Don’t sweat it. Next, ratings can flip flop and might not have anything to do with your service. I’ve had a 100% rating for a long, long time. Right now, I have 87.5% because of one buyer who was upset they didn’t make sales on the e-commerce store I sold them (who didn’t follow the sales strategy I provided). It’s out of my hands and I try not to sweat the stuff I can’t control. Move on.
  6. Take advantage of the relationships you make: I’ve had buyers purchase multiple sites from me over and over again on the platform. All because of the smooth purchase process and communication. I’ve even been approached for partnerships, joint venture opportunities, and more. Flippa can bring a lot of fruitful relationships your way.
  7. Ask for help: If you have a question, Flippa Support is there to help. I don’t contact them often but, if I’m stuck on something or have a question, I don’t hesitate to reach out.
  8. BONUS: Get on website flipping Twitter: I just joined this a few weeks ago and it’s gold. It’s like getting a free education from seasoned flippers. It’s great. Not the same as taking a paid course but the gems they drop from time to time are really eye-opening.

TL;DR

I’ve made almost $40K on Flippa.

During my time on the platform, I’ve learned a ton:

  • I do what’s working
  • Research is a part of my process
  • Paid tools are the GOAT
  • Upgrades can be beneficial (but they aren’t foolproof)
  • Positive feedback is important but not might not matter as much as you think
  • Relationship-building on Flippa can bring fruitful rewards
  • When you have a question, reach out to Flippa Support for help
  • Get on Website Flipping Twitter
