Summary

Kristina God, a writer and creator of the Online Writing Kickstarter Bootcamp, has intentionally paused her daily writing habit to focus on creating video content, aiming to grow beyond words and enhance the user experience for creators on Medium, following the platform's acquisition of the multimedia design platform Projector.

Abstract

Kristina God has shifted her creative efforts from writing to video production to better connect with her Online Writing Kickstarter Bootcamp participants and to align with Medium's strategic expansion into multimedia content. This pivot is influenced by Medium's acquisition of Projector, a move interpreted as a desire to innovate and diversify the platform's content offerings. Kristina's decision to embrace video is also inspired by the success of other writers who have ventured into YouTube, such as her bootcamper Alicia Dominguez. Despite facing challenges like imposter syndrome and time constraints, Kristina has adopted a problem-solving mindset, drawing strength from the philosophy that obstacles can be transformed into opportunities for growth. She encourages aspiring course creators to adopt a similar can-do attitude and to take action towards their dreams, emphasizing the importance of progress over perfection.

I Broke My Daily Writing Habit

to grow beyond words

I have a confession to make. The last few evenings I’ve been breaking my daily writing habit.

But I did it on purpose. I have a good reason.

I made video recordings instead of writing articles.

Wow, and why?

A few weeks ago, I launched my brand-spankin' new Online Writing Kickstarter Bootcamp.

We are a cohort of 15 aspiring writers. Our exclusive Slack group is full of encouragement and inspiration.

Every week I share a lecture with my bootcampers. Although I’m a writer, for the very first time I show myself in front of the camera.

In my opinion, it’s crucial to build a personal connection with my bootcampers.

Grow beyond words

With Medium’s latest acquisition of the Multimedia Design platform Projector (a competitor of the popular Canva site) TechCrunch assumes that Medium wants to ‘expand beyond words’.

Ev Williams wants to bring Medium ‘to the next level’ with this acquisition, to innovate the user experience and Medium’s (design) tools for creators and I like it!

There are already a handful of (Top) writers who introduce themselves on YouTube or even have their own YouTube channels such as my bootcamper and fiction writer Alicia Dominguez from Spain.

She wants to raise awareness for gothic storytelling.

I will figure this out.

When I found the courage to create my first digital course a few weeks ago, it wasn’t my (writing) skills that helped me succeed.

It was my attitude.

The motto for my first online course became:

I will figure this out.

The obstacle is the way

Yes, I had to deal with...

  • imposter syndrome
  • being a non-native speaker
  • my perfectionism
  • not having enough time to prep my recording and writing a script beforehand (first, we moved to an island, then my baby was sick)

My husband reminded me of Ryan Holiday, bestselling author of ‘Obstacle is the way’.

My favorite quotes from his powerful book are:

Think progress, not perfection.

The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.

These inspiring thoughts helped me to actually press ‘Launch’.

Embrace the moment

I’m sure everybody has something to say and to teach.

Do you have a digital course dream?

Then…

  • just give your dream a shot.
  • open your mind to what might be possible.
  • be willing to show up and to learn in the process.

When I’ve announced my online course and hit ‘publish’ I didn’t have it all figured out.

But by hitting publish my idea became a reality.

When 70 people wanted to be part of my class I knew I just had to do this.

Final Takeaways

Bootcamper T Mann describes our Medium community as:

(…) a group of misfits, intellects, best sellers, wannabes, and so much more, all sharing, exploring, and analyzing life to death.

If you’re a ‘wannabe’ online course creator follow my lead.

Open your mind to what might be possible and just make your dream come true.

All I ask from you is that you embrace this simple attitude:

I will figure this out.
