I Better Stop Drinking: My Blood Pressure Shot Up
I had planned my 2024 writing, but there are always unforeseen events. Sometimes things never go as smoothly as we planned. I might have to change my plan based on my health ability.
At the beginning of the year, I fell sick and went to the clinic to consult the doctor. My blood pressure was in the range of 155.
The doctor was shocked and asked me to relax and retake my blood pressure on another arm, which was also about 150.
The doctor asked, “Sir, have you been feeling stressed lately?” I replied, “Not sure, maybe I’m worried about my sister’s surgery and work-related issues.”
I was given some medication for my sore throat. As for the high blood pressure, the doctor asked to monitor it first. Maybe it was due to nervousness when feeling unwell.
So, I assume this is maybe a one-time issue as my blood pressure is always moderate. The following factors might cause my high blood pressure:
- Stress
- Alcohol
- Salty food
- Lack of exercise
I don’t smoke in my entire life, but I can’t avoid being a second-hand smoker. Most of my friends are smokers. I used to drink a lot, but lately less.
If there’s a gathering, I will still drink quite a lot. Which I need to stop immediately to monitor my blood pressure closely.
Another problem is that I didn’t exercise. When I stopped playing football, I stopped running and sweating.
Getting injured made me even lazier to move around. I did the basic physio exercises just to strengthen my muscles. So, I need to get up and start sweating again.
I don’t eat fruits either. I think the old saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ should be drilled into my mind. I will start to eat apples or drink apple juice to see if it will help.
I will mix in some watermelon and papaya along the way. I know many say bananas are good, but I just don’t like the taste of it.
I bought an electronic blood pressure monitor to check my blood pressure for these two days. During the day, noon, and evening, it’s totally different.
I’m still trying to figure out how to keep my blood pressure down naturally without any medication.
I found two YouTube videos teaching breathing exercises. To my surprise, it really worked and of course, things won’t happen in a day.

After I tried the deep breathing of inhale and exhale, my blood pressure dropped from 140 to 128. I will keep working on it and monitor if it improves.
