I Became a Top Writer in Two Topics in Less Than 60 Days. Here’s What I Learned.

The universe has a habit of sending the best news unexpectedly. Today, I got an e-mail from Medium announcing: “Congrats, you’re a top writer in Fiction on Medium”.

I sure wasn’t expecting this. It’s been only two weeks since I found out I’m a top writer in ´Satire´. Now I’m a top writer in ´Fiction´ too.

I wasn’t trying to become a top writer in either of these topics, yet that’s what happened.

You Need to Tag Your Stories with One of the 73 Official Top Writer Tags to Get the Award

As I mentioned in my post on my first Medium top writer award, there are top writers in every single Medium tag. But only 73 tags entitle you to the official Medium top writer award. You need to add one of these tags to your stories to be eligible to become a top writer.

I also mentioned different ways to become a top writer. The first way is to write stories that become very popular. Of course, you can’t control this. But this is how I became a top writer in two tags. Another way is to write lots of stories with the same tag.

Now that I’m a top writer in two topics, I realized something more important than anything I mentioned in my previous post.

Write What You Love the Most

This is the most important thing I learned from becoming a top writer in two topics within my first 60 days on Medium: Write what you love the most.

My absolutely most viral and most popular Medium story so far is a fictional satire. I used the ´Satire´ and ´Fiction´ tags in this story, so I think this story played a big role in my both top writer awards.

It makes sense to me that my most popular story is fiction. Because I’m a fiction writer before anything else. When I write fiction, I really put my heart into it.

So, here’s the lesson I learned. When you write what you love the most and what you’re best at, success will follow.

Trying to write something you think will be popular that is not really you is not the way. I’ve tried writing all those fancy non-fiction articles because I thought that’s what you got to do to become successful on Medium. Yet my most viral article is a fiction story.

I’m going to write more fiction from now on. Because that’s who I am; a fiction writer.
